James "Jamie" Weaver Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 27, 2025.
Jamie Weaver passed away in Toronto on his 44th birthday, surrounded by the immense love of his family and community. Born in Vancouver, he was the beloved son of Gerald Weaver and Carolyn Tate, brother to Nick Weaver, and chosen sibling to dozens of others who counted him as family. He was the devoted husband of Clare Hacksel and a deeply loving father to Lucy and Raines, his proudest accomplishment and the clearest reflection of his spirit.

Growing up, Jamie was both brilliant and kind. From the start, it was clear he had a sharp mind and an even gentler heart. He filled his days with sports like tennis, biking, rollerblading, snowboarding, and hockey, and filled his notebooks with sketches, which later blossomed into a love of both graffiti and fine art. His summers were joyfully spent on biking holidays or at the cottage with cousins, swimming off the beach, laughing under the poplar trees, and soaking up the beauty of Lake Ontario. He had a lifelong passion for music, constantly searching for the next great album to share with friends. Although his taste spanned all genres, he had a special affinity for 90s hip-hop and dubstep.

Jamie was a scientist committed to improving the health of others. At Johnson & Johnson, his work became fundamental to the research and advancement of drug safety. Jamie used his own experiences with cancer and real-world data to inform his own care decisions, which resulted in his being the keynote speaker at the 2021 OHDSI Global Symposium and subsequently being profiled in USA Today. He held degrees from McGill University, the University of Toronto, and New York University. Even in the face of cancer, he continued to pursue a PhD at the University of Oxford, driven by his passion for lifelong learning.

Jamie was a connector, a host, a maker of community. He loved bringing people together, whether through an impromptu dinner party, a long run, or a shared playlist. He was an incredible cook, an energetic athlete, and the kindest person anyone could hope to know. He never judged or spoke ill of others. He offered help freely, supported everyone around him with grace, and always knew how to bring the party to a room.

Besides his many accomplishments, Jamie was most proud of his children. As a father, he was endlessly devoted. He parented with tenderness, duty, and joy. His children embody the very best in him: artistic, inquisitive, kind, and full of love.

Jamie's greatest love was Clare. Theirs was a once-in-a-lifetime bond, steadfast, joyful, and filled with meaning. They built a life full of laughter, curiosity, and unwavering partnership.

A celebration of Jamie's life will be held on August 10, 2025, from 2-5 pm at the East Room, 50 Carroll St, Toronto. All are welcome to be with those who loved him. Jamie adored children and the friends of Lucy and Raines are welcome to attend, childminding will be provided. Jamie loved to dress well, so please wear something bright that would make him smile. Please, no flowers.

For years, Jamie and I were the part time North American continent cohort of DPhils. Together, I often joked, we made 1 full time DPhil student.

I´ll never forget our 2021 matriculation/induction weeks. I even got to see him across the Sheldonian as we read an abridged Latin passage and became Oxons. Truly a priceless moment of kinship.

I´ll miss him every time I walk to the top of Headington Hill or hear a dope beat. I´m lucky he had the patience to explain complicated math and programming to me. That he always eviscerated me during Q&A so I could be prepared for reviewer 2 energy.

Because I knew you, I´ve been changed for good.

I did my mph with Jamie 15 years ago and his memory is the most pronounced of anyone from that program years later as he was both the brightest light, the most charming human and an understated cheerleader of others. I didn't know he struggled with cancer. I am so deeply sorry to hear this. I cannot imagine the enormity of the emptiness he's left behind

My deepest condolences to Jamie´s family, especially his wife and daughters. I can´t begin to imagine what you´re going through or how difficult this time must be.

Jamie and I were good friends during our Master of Public Health at the University of Toronto. He was an exceptionally bright student who rose to and conquered every challenge put before him. So much so that he enrolled in and completed PhD-level epidemiology statistics courses during his master´s. I wouldn´t be where I am today without him jogging alongside me, encouraging me, and pushing me to take on new challenges during that time.

What made Jamie truly exceptional, though, was his kindness. He was one of the warmest, most welcoming people I´ve ever known. As usually the quietest person in the room, I can attest to the fact that he made everyone feel included and was always genuinely glad to see others.

You will be deeply missed, my friend.

Everything written about Jamie above is so true. His was a one of a kind light. I'm sending my deepest condolences and love to his family and especially to his children. There will never be a shortage of people to remind them of how amazing their father was and how much he means to so many. May he rest easy and may your hearts and spirit be held firm in love during this difficult time and forevermore.

Gerry, Carolyn and Nick our thoughts are with you and your family. We met Jamie & your family during Ian´s and Jamie´s hockey years. As you recall they both played defence. We got to know Jamie when he spent time with us at home and during pre-hockey meet ups. He was a good guy.

Heartbroken to learn of Jamie's passing. What a bright light! I remember how lucky I felt to start my McGill career at Solin Hall with the incredible cast of characters who would remain connected through our college lives and beyond. Sending love to the family... he was one of a kind.
