I had the pleasure serving Jim at the restaurant i work at. I'm in shock and saddend beyond belief. Going to miss my talks to him about an author we both liked. My deepest codolinces to his family.
That voice will stay with me for all of time.

Well, some people are just larger than life. Jim was one of those people. Not because he occupied the space but instead because his universe was delightfully large and active. So to be with Jim was also to be somewhat a guest in his universe. The wonderous nature of Jim was not to let you feel like a guest but rather a friend who just made his day brighter by arriving. One of our great friends would host one particular party which almost always requested a costume. I think it fair to say that Jim and I were sometimes the only two who would take it seriously enough to come fully equipped. In fact, if I didn't see him in costume, it would worry me greatly that I had arrived at the wrong event. Jim would look at me in my North Korean suit while he was fully decked in his military outfit and we would share a wink; yes, we both were "on board" in case somebody had just thought maybe we had gone mad and just dressed that way. I was grateful to intersect his universe and his stars and lights will stay with me.

Less well known than his other public and private activities, was Jim's practice of providing enthusiastic and material support to Canadian scholars working in several fields. All deeply appreciated the encouragement he offered. A remarkable citizen of Bay St. and Main St.

a beautiful obituary for a remarkable man - I will miss his astute comments and sense of humor on his BNN appearances. Much sympathy to his family .
