James "Jim" Hoeksema Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 7, 2023.
James (Jim) Robert Hoeksema, of Hillsboro, Oregon, passed away on February 9th, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. He was 85 years old. Jim was born on December 7th, 1936, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Jurjen (Jay) and Antoinette (Toni) Hoeksema and was their only child.

Jim graduated from Central High School in Cincinnati in 1955 and joined the Air Force, where he served on active duty until 1962. He then joined the Air Force Reserves until 1966 and reenlisted in the reserves again in 1977. He was called up for active duty again during Operation Desert Storm, serving from December 1990 until June 1991, and retired from the reserves in November 1991 with the rank of Tech Sergeant.

In his civilian life, Jim worked as a custodian at the veteran's hospital in Seattle, on Beacon Hill. He was an active member of his church, serving as a deacon, and was a devoted Presbyterian. Jim had a great sense of humor and was known for his dedication to his family. He enjoyed watching sports, particularly the Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners, and spent many hours listening to his favorite records and spending time with his family, including his beloved dog, Rascal. Jim will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Cecile Hoeksema and is survived by his son Orson, daughter-in-law Cathy, and granddaughter Madison, all of Hillsboro, Oregon.

James is buried at Washelli Cemetery in Seattle, WA. Memorial contributions may be made to World Vision. https://www.worldvision.org/donate
