James Rommel Johnson Sr., aged 82, passed away on August 29, 2024, in Winchester, California at home. Born on the same day in 1942, James led a fulfilling life marked by his joyful and fun personality, he was beloved by many.

James spent 25 years dedicated to the Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, California before retiring. His commitment to his work reflected his compassionate nature and his desire to help others find peace and healing. He met his wife, Jamie there. They were married at the time of his death.

He was a man of simple pleasures, finding joy in barbecue, watching football, and listening to blues music. These hobbies were a testament to his easygoing and enjoyable approach to life.

James is survived by his son James Jr., daughter Janelle (Patricia Russell). Antwenette (Liz), (Alice Johnson) Rachel Coates (Deion), and Raven; brothers Errol Johnson (Mary) and Rufus Thompson (Gail); sister Carmen Greer (Marcus); and numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his father James R. Johnson, mother Ruby Dell Davis, and son Craig Johnson.

A private memorial was held for James on October 5, 2024, in Arizona commemorating his rich and vibrant life. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice, honoring James's generous spirit.

I will always remember, my brother loved Bobby Blue Bland. He even rented a video of performances. I only knew about the artist because of Rommel. He too, was unique.

I remember his Dodge van and how much he loved it! It had mag wheels and I think a refrigerator in it. Rommel had a very strong personality.
