James King Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 10, 2025.
With profound sadness and deep love, we announce the passing of James Nishan King, born on January 9, 1956, at Selfridge Air Force Base in Michigan, to the late James Edward King and Clarice Hortence King. James passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, strength, and quiet humility.

James was preceded in death by his beloved parents, his brother Nathaniel King, his cherished niece Shawnette Mickey, and his faithful furry companion, Butch, who brought him endless joy and comfort.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Karen Rolfe King, whom he married on May 8, 2001. James was a proud stepfather to Corinne (Orlando) Alvarez, Alicia McIntosh, and Meghan (Jarrett) Brooks. He also leaves behind his dear siblings: Donna (Gary) Baldwin, Deatra Lopez, Deana (Andre) Weston, Nesmond (Rabiha) King, and Norbert (Renee) King, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a circle of friends who will deeply miss his presence.

James dedicated his professional life to the care and betterment of children and young adults. His journey began at the Children's Home in Mount Holly, New Jersey, where he touched the lives of countless youth. He continued his service at the Lehigh County Juvenile Detention Center, where he rose to the position of Supervisor before his well-earned retirement. Never one to rest on his laurels, James later worked as a member of the security team at Lehigh Valley Hospital Network continuing to protect and serve his community.

A true Renaissance man, James was a self-taught musician whose love of music knew no bounds. He mastered instruments including the flute, saxophone, guitar, and piano. As neuropathy slowly affected his hands, he turned to his voice, sharing his musical gift with heartfelt expression.

A proud Jersey native, James carried the ocean in his soul. He found serenity and joy in every trip back to the beach, never missing a chance to reconnect with the sea.

To those who knew him, James was a man of grace, humility, and dry wit. If you had asked him what he had accomplished in life, he might have shrugged and smiled, simply saying, "I've done some things."

But those who loved him know the truth-James did more than some things. He gave love freely, served with integrity, and brought music, laughter, and strength into the world. His memory will live on in every life he touched.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday July 26th from 3PM to 7PM at Allentown Brew Works, 812 W. Hamilton St., Allentown, PA 18101. Parking is available at Walnut Garage on 8th and Walnut, as well as the Spiral Deck on 8th and Linden.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor James's memory by supporting a charity of your choosing in his name.

Rest in peace, James. You've done more than enough.

We're so sorry to hear this, Karen. We always enjoyed our short chats with Jim when we'd visit next door. He did so much, yet remained so humble. Prayers for peace and strength go out to you and everyone who loved him.

Rest in God's comfort and glory, Jim - and enjoy all the cigars you want!

Karen, Jamie and I are just so incredibly sorry for the passing of Big Jim. He was a wonderful human, full of stories and advice. Since our move, we've missed the booming voice coming from your house while Jim would sing his heart out. He was our neighborhood protection plan, mentor and just all around good guy. Our prayers are with you and your family at this very sad time. Sending so much love from NC. God Bless.

I will never forget the first time I met Mr. king. I was finishing college at DeSales University and landed a job at the Juvenile Detention Center. I had the honor and privilege to work along side Jim for several years. He was passionate about helping others especially the youth. Jim always had pride in everything he did. From working on his fish pond, bbq recipes, and playing saxophone. Some of my best memories with him were outside of work hanging out on his patio smoking cigars and just talking about life. He was a great mentor and friend. He will deeply be missed. Until we meet again my friend.

I am very saddened by James´ passing. I grew up around the corner from him and his family. James and my brother Gary became best friends. The King family was part of our family. The devastation of losing Nate my last year of high school remains in my soul. James and I formed a closer bond since the passing of my brother. He wrote beautiful songs and would send them to me. I have been texting him and not getting a response which was not common. Never did I imagine that would be the last song from my other brother. Rest well and know that you will be missed dearly. Thank you for all of the memories throughout my childhood and adulthood. James, you were one of a kind and I´m grateful to have had you in my life. God bless the family in this loss and know that I am praying for all of you

I am so sorry that Jim has passed. We were neighbors for 20 years and became good friends. I still remember Jim and Ed sucking bees into his leaf vacuum, laughing and cheering the whole time!

Oh my how I will miss you my dear friend.

So many wonderful memories, so much love, so much giving all bundled in with a bunch of sarcastic remarks.

We always kidded about Terry is going to slap me upside the head. We spoke many times of how glorious and beautiful Heaven is. So much so that most earthly eyes and ears cannot even begin to comprehend it. But we knew.

You are surrounded by it all, embracing every morsel of it. Until we meet again dear friend. I will keep Karen close and send her much Love
