James Lipan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 31, 2025.
James "Jim" Harris Lipan, age 78, of Frederick, Maryland passed from this life on January 29, 2025.

Jim was born September 28, 1946 in Steubenville, Ohio to John Andy Lipan and Hazel Harris Lipan. He grew up in Weirton, West Virginia and graduated from Follansbee High School in 1964. Prior to graduation, he spent several years working in his parents' businesses such as the Tastee Freeze and Amoco gas station. He then went to work in the steel mill (National Steel) after high school graduation.

He married his high school sweetheart Tamara Gene Edwards on August 17, 1968. He studied at West Liberty University for a year with the remaining time at Shepherd College. He graduated with a degree in Comprehensive Social Studies with a minor in Math. He obtained a Certification in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland and a Master's degree in Administration from Western Maryland College. He retired in 2001 after a 32-year career working for the public school system. In Frederick County Public Schools, he worked as a teacher (Middletown Elementary, East Frederick Elementary, New Market Elementary), vice principal (South Frederick Elementary), and in administration in the Central Office (purchasing, warehousing, and food service). He worked the latter part of his career in Baltimore County Public Schools in an administrative capacity. During his career in education, he was active in the Teacher's union.

Jim's hobbies included playing cards (especially poker), fishing, and collecting classic sports cars. He was an active member of the Moose, the Eagles, Sertoma, the Redman's club, and the Jefferson Patriot club. He spent many years coaching baseball and basketball.

Jim is survived by his wife Tam, to whom he would like to express his heartfelt gratitude for putting up with him for so many years. He is also survived by his three wonderful children: daughter Dr Jami Lipan Butz (Dr Steve Butz), son Brad Lipan (Ashley DeGrange with daughter Adalyn DeGrange), and daughter Amanda Lipan. He leaves behind two grandchildren: Ryleigh and Everett Butz. Also surviving are his sisters Leslie Bacich (Dominic Carpini) of West Virginia and Elaine Echelle (John Echelle) of Florida.

The family will accept visitors at Resthaven Funeral Home (9501 Catoctin Mountain Hwy, Frederick MD 21701) on Friday February 7th from 4:00 PM until 5:30PM. Services will be held immediately following from 5:30 PM until 6:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim's honor to Frederick County Animal Control, 1832 Rosemont Avenue, Frederick MD 21702, from whom he adopted many of his most beloved companions.

I continually have vivid fond memories to reflect upon with cousin Jimmy. I frequently think of many crazy things I did with him like shot putting in the back alley. At about 5 years old, my shot went about 3´! Jimmy, save me a seat at the bar. I´ll be coming to see you. Lord, hug this wise man for me.
