James Martin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 7, 2022.

James P. Martin, 33, of Cranston, passed away unexpectedly on June 3rd, 2022. James was born in Providence and grew up in Pawtucket. He graduated from William Davies Junior Career and Technical High School. Beloved son of Laurie Martin, he leaves behind siblings Joe Hovan, Johanna Martin and Luke Martin, adored daughter Kali, many aunts, uncles, cousins and his best friend and partner in the absurd Shalyn Quigley. James worked for many years at Atlantis Pool Service, a tight knit community which was his second family.

An avid skateboarder and lover of all things Marvel, he will be remembered for his beautiful green eyes, charming smile, wacky sense of humor, bad dad jokes, honesty and loyalty to his friends and family. James and his sister, Johanna, had an incredible lifelong bond, always having each other's backs and usually found concocting some mischievous scheme or debating obscure facts. His greatest love and absolute devotion was for his daughter, Kali. They were inseparable, "two peas in a pod", so alike in looks and temperament that Kali is known as "James Jr."

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to visiting hours Thursday, June 9th from 5-7 PM in the Costigan-O’Neill Funeral Home, 220 Cottage Street, Pawtucket. A private burial will held in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.

In his honor, please remember James with a smile, a kind word or act to a stranger in need, or a donation to National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Our family had the pleasure of meeting James as a young boy
I was his daycare mom for a few years and his neighbor
James always came into our home with a smile on his face and ready to play with our kids and our family dog
We are heartbroken to hear this sad news of James passing
We want to send our love and prayers to the Martin family and to his beautiful daughter Kali
May you Rest In Peace James

My deepest condolences to all of James loved ones. I recently saw some old home movies my sister had compiled for mother's day of us as babies/toddlers. In one of them my mom is kind of interviewing me asking me about who lives in the apartment and who I like to play with. My eyes light up and with a huge smile I answer Jimmy but I like to call him Jim-bo. I thought to myself while watching those how much I missed my cousin and said to myself I really should try & get in touch with him & catch-up. I am so sorry we never got the chance but believe I will see him in heaven some day. Praying for you all.

I think a lot of workplaces talk about “family”, but at Atlantis that term really means something. With James’ passing, we all truly feel as if we’ve lost a family member. Everyone here is just so devastated by this loss.

James was so many things. In one moment he would be quoting a line from a cartoon and the next moment he would be casually inserting an SAT word into the conversation. He was a deep thinker and always wanted to delve further than anyone else to understand the root of a concept, whether it was about pool chemistry or political discourse. He was a guy who skateboarded and wore Marvel T-shirts, but listened to NPR. He had so many levels and he was able to connect with people on all of those levels. He somehow could be the intellect and the scamp all at once.

In recent years he played a big part in training new employees due to his expertise and the fact that his management style was one that worked with virtually everyone. He had a way of building people up and creating a personal connection that was uplifting and got the best out of everyone. Whenever I announced work assignments, everyone was always happy when they got to be with James for the day. He just had that way about him where everyone felt welcome. There is no greater testament to a person than how they make other people feel and James always made other people feel valued and part of the team. I sent out an email to our customers letting them know of James passing and was completely overwhelmed with the outpouring of responses we have received. Dozens and dozens and dozens of people who liked and respected him and are just as devastated by his passing as we are. James truly made an impact on all who knew him.

It is impossible to sum up James in a just a few paragraphs, but the one thing that stood out, above all else, was his love for Kali. He talked about her every chance he got and she was his pride and joy. Every thing he did in life was with her best interests in mind. He was so incredibly proud of her and so proud to be her dad.

I am so fortunate to have known James for the years that I did and know that his memory will live on with me and with so many people for a very long time to come.

I think a lot of workplaces talk about "family", but at Atlantis that term really means something. With James´ passing, we all truly feel as if we´ve lost a family member. Everyone here is just so devastated by this loss.

He was a deep thinker and always wanted to delve further than anyone else to understand the root of a concept, whether it was about pool chemistry or political theory. In one moment he could be so serious and concerned and the next he´d be cracking a joke.

In recent years he played a big part in training new employees due to his expertise and his management style was one that worked with virtually everyone. We have a lot of vehicles here that need to be shuffled around from time to time and one of my great pleasures in life is getting in a vehicle and finding out what a given person listens to. Usually the radio station matches the persona, but every now and then I get a surprise. None more so than James. I was shocked when James first started working here to discover that he listened to NPR. Not what I expected to find from the guy who skateboarded with the Marvel T-shirts. But that was James in a nutshell. He had so many levels. And as the years went by, I appreciated connecting with him on all of those levels. He somehow could be the intellect and the scamp all at once.

This past weekend I sent out an email to our customers letting them know of James passing. I was overwhelmed with the outpouring of responses we have received in reply.
