In Loving Memory of James Lewis Martin

July 24, 1937 - January 10, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James Lewis Martin (Jim), 87, of Naples, Florida. Jim passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love and presence of his cherished family.

Born on July 24, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, to Jane and Wesley Martin, Jim's life was defined by remarkable achievements, enduring love, and unwavering kindness. He attended Christ School in Arden, North Carolina, where his leadership and athletic talent shone brightly as the captain of the football, basketball, and baseball teams, earning letters in all three sports. Following high school, Jim pursued his passion for football at Wofford College on a scholarship, leading to a brief professional stint with the Cleveland Browns before answering the call of duty.

Jim honorably served his country in the United States Army for three and a half years in the years following the Korean War, embodying the values of service and dedication that would guide him throughout his life.

A man of many talents and boundless generosity, Jim wore many hats during his lifetime. Above all, he was a devoted husband to Janet Martin, with whom he shared 63 wonderful years of marriage, and a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Professionally, Jim was a cornerstone of the Naples community, contributing his leadership and wisdom as the President of the Kiwanis Club and Hospice of Naples, Chairman of Moorings Park and Christ School, Treasurer of First Presbyterian Church of Naples, and as the founder and owner of James L. Martin Inc.

Jim will be remembered for his warm-hearted spirit, sharp sense of humor, and an enduring love of Michigan sports and desserts. His kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him, and his legacy will continue to inspire all who loved him.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Janet Martin; his daughters, Tamara Boxwell (Scott) and Deeatra Keefer (David); his siblings, Wesley Martin Jr. (Dianne) and Sue Tritschler (Fred); his grandchildren, James Burmeister (Marne), Ryan Burmeister (Neesha), and Janet Guelfi; and his great-grandchildren, Hayden, Parker, and Zelda Burmeister. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jane and Wesley Martin.

Jim's life was a testament to love, service, and generosity, and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and community.

Being friends with Jim and Janet has been simply great, being neighbors was just the beginning. I am a baker and seeing Jim´s excitement over a plate of warm cookies made me smile. John and I always looked forward to his life stories over a beer and a glass of Chardonnay with Janet. Jim will be missed and forever in our hearts.

Jim was truly a remarkable man and he will be missed greatly. We loved being neighbors of Jim and Jan at Les Chateaux. He had a great sense of humour and was so fun to be around. We first moved into our condo next to Jim and spent the day cleaning and painting. Needless to say we were pretty tired. Jim saw us and invited us to dinner that evening, even though we had just met. God Bless Jan and his beloved family.
