Dear Mark,Frankie,Neil and Heather,Jim and Lucien,Laurie, Mike,Pam,Matt,Joe,Tom and Kathryn,
Grit,Guts, and Glory. These words describe what our families and America have lost with the passing of this honorable man. Joe describes him as one of the few men he truly admired and cherished. We should all strive to live up to his legacy. His ability to entertain with his spine tingling and enlightening stories of his experiences touched crowds and individuals alike. And he truly enjoyed telling his stories. If only we had listened more closely.
We will truly miss his presence but must believe we will see him again someday. He is healthy and whole now, climbing mountains and glassing for bucks.
Did you hear the redtail hawk cry at his burial service? That was him watching.Did you notice the street sign that pointed the way to the Police station-1 block away? That was him laughing.
Bless him for the sacrifices he has made for us.
You took such good care of him in those final, painful days. We should all be so blessed.
Some family you are stuck with, and some you get to pick for yourself.
Love to you all,
Joe and Lisa Vaughan

Jim and Mark,
I am so honored to have met your dad! It was such an awesome experience to interview him for the 91st Division! I still smile when I think about the war stories he told (and they were all true!). I learned so much from SFC McDermott about World War II and the Division I call "home." His interview launched my personal quest for other 91st Division WWII survivors I could talk to. Your dad was truly a member of the "Greatest Generation" and will be greatly missed! Thank you for sharing his life, his story and his uniform with us! May his memories bring you a smile in the days to come. In His Awesome Service,

Proud Hunter and Father

I will be creating a Memorial Card for James. I hope it is something that the family will be able to look at in the future and feel that it pays honor to his life. May the God of all comfort be with Mr. McDermott's family during this difficult time.

Jim was one of the nicest men I have ever known. I loved going over to their house with my Dad. I have a wonderful memory of visiting with both Mr. and Mrs. McDermott at my mother's memorial. We were so touched that they came. My heart goes out to the family, he will be missed. Sincerey, Lori (Oberholser) Luna
