James F. McIntyre

James F. McIntyre, 90, a longtime resident and police officer in Somerset, passed away in his home after a long illness. He was married for 25 years to the late Elizabeth A. (Nolan) McIntyre, and later married for 19 years with the late Joan B. (Rego) McIntyre. Jim was born in Fall River, a son of the late John McIntyre and the late Mary B. (Reardon) McIntyre. He was active and hard working throughout his life. From the age of 7 he delivered the Herald News in his Division St. neighborhood, and on Saturdays would take the bus to Gage Hill on North Main St. where he would clean stalls and earn the opportunity to ride a horse. He would bail boats and sail at the King Philip Yacht Club, eventually saving enough to buy his own boat. He was active in the Sea Scouts and had the opportunity to meet President Harry S. Truman as a member of the Northeast Region, Report to the Nation Ceremony. Jim was a graduate of Coyle Cassidy High School and went on to serve in the Navy during the Korean War as a radio man. He was one of 61 survivors of the USS Hobson sinking, when the aircraft carrier USS Wasp over ran his vessel, cutting it in half. After the Navy he worked for Stone and Webster at the Montaup Power Plant in Somerset. In 1959 he became a Somerset Police Officer. During the 70s he was a Lt. Detective and in 1988 retired with the rank of Captain. After retiring from the Somerset Police, he became a volunteer for the charitable organization We Love Children, serving as president for over 20 years. He found great satisfaction helping fund travel expenses for families seeking specialist medical care across the country. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Partington of Somerset; and two grandsons Benjamin J. Partington and his wife Maxine, and William S. Partington, II and his wife Jamie all of Fall River; and a great grandson Wyatt Thomas Partington, and an expected great grandson, Leighton Partington; a devoted caregiver, Kim Benevides, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Donald T. Partington, and his siblings Timmy, Mary, John, Joe, and Tom. Due to Covid restrictions, current services are being held privately.
