James Melton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 20 to Apr. 21, 2006.
MELTON, JAMES DAVID "Another day, another opportunity to excel!" reflected the attitude of this wonderful God/Country/Family man. Jim Melton, a retired East Baton Rouge Parish educator and retired U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. He was 87. A viewing service was held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Thursday, April 20, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A graveside "passing on service" is at Resthaven Gardens of Memory, 11817 Jefferson Highway, at 1 p.m. Friday, April 21. This has provided two opportunities for family and friends to pay their respects. Casual attire is also appropriate. He is survived by his bride of 63 years, Mrs. Marjorie Nelle (DeJean) Melton of Baton Rouge; daughter, Jeanne Ricks of Baton Rouge; daughter-in-law and son, Linda and James D. Melton Jr. of Valrico, Fla.; and eight grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren from Louisiana, Florida, South Carolina, Massachusetts and Maine. James D. Melton was born in Eufaula, Okla., in 1919, the oldest of six children (four sisters and a brother) to proud parents, E.W. and Jennie Lee Melton. He always loved family and remembered the hard times of the Great Depression which helped develop the strong Christian faith, positive attitude, education and hard work core values that formed his character. ("When it's too tough for someone else, it's just right for me.") A graduate of Shamrock High School in Oklahoma, he also received his bachelor's degree from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in Ruston and a master's degree from Northwestern State College in Natchitoches. He had been a Baton Rouge resident since 1958 when he was recruited to teach. He is in the Broadmoor High School's Teacher Hall of Fame, loved to read and to help make people think. "If you can teach someone how to think instead of what to think, they'll make out just fine." He was a great teacher and storyteller whether in a classroom or around family and friends. "Have you stamped out any ignorance today? Everyone is ignorant about something, but ignorance is correctable – stupid is forever." He was a member of East Gate Lodge F&AM and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was active with the DeMolay and Boy Scouts and loved to read, fish, collect coins and play golf. He was a member of Parkview Baptist Church and a former Sunday school teacher. We celebrate his life and his spirit! "A man's got to do what a man's got to do!" If desired, a contribution to your favorite charity in his name is preferred in lieu of flowers.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you that have posted a note on this site and to the newspaper for making it possible. It has meant a great deal to me as his "favorite" niece to know how much he was loved, admired, and respected. I shall treasure my special memories of my Uncle James, his laughter, his wonderful hugs and sense of humor.

Again, thank each of you for doing this for our family.

I was extremely fortunate to have taken Mr. Melton's class in 1973. He was one of the finest teachers I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. His animated teaching style always kept you interested in his lesons. My fondest memory was when he explained how his family got their name. He relayed the story of a distant ancestor who found the processing building hot. When asked how he was doing and his name, he replied "I'mmm a Meltin'" and so from that day forward a great name was bestowed. He truly touched many lives that passed through the halls of Broadmoor High School. I shall always remember this kind, caring man. My sincere condolences to his family, may you rest with the knowledge that he walks with His Saviour, and smiles on each of you.

I have such fond memories of Mr. Melton. He was one of my favorite teachers in 1976, so I asked him to sign my yearbook. He was well respected and admired. His stories were always wonderful, and his teaching methods were outstanding. History was never my favorite subject, but I thoroughly enjoyed his class. He made it interesting. I've often thought about him over the years, am I am sad to know he is gone. I have my memories of his wisdom, wit, enthusiasm, and kind-heartedness.

Mr. Buhler might of had the Hoogs, but, Mr. Melton had the entire Student Council. In the same class with Mr.Wingate, Mr. McLemore, Mrs. Barnett, Mrs. Milner, Mr. Bergeron and Mrs. Aucoin...Mr. Melton had high standards. He never slacked off when it came to giving licks either. Because of him some biology will hang with us forever!

I was fortunate enough to be in Mr. Melton's class in 1976. What a delight with the 200th anniversary of the country. He was an excitable enjoyable teacher to be around. We were all blessed by having a chance to enjoy his energy and character.

I have very fond memories of "Mr. Melton" from my years at Broadmoor High School. He was the kind of teacher you never forget and come to appreciate more as the years pass. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. He touched many lives in a very positive way.

What a fair person Mr. Melton was. He was always very informative in his presentations of lessons in the origins of life and everyday stories of life. I am very fortunate to have known him. The last time I saw him he was fishing at False River. Along with other teachers at Broadmoor High,he is in my memory book.
