James Millar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 28 to Dec. 31, 2006.
MILLAR, James Silver (owner of the House of Scotland) April 19, 1927 - December 25, 2006 The family of Jim Millar wishes to announce his passing on Christmas morning, after a valiant five month struggle with cancer. Born in Glasgow, Scotland on April 19, 1927, Jim immigrated to Canada in the 1950's, however, as a proud (and stubborn) Scot, he never for a moment, lost sight of his roots. Pre-deceased by his second wife Audrey (MacLeod) of Ottawa, parents and sisters in Scotland, Jim will be lovingly remembered by sister Alexa Duncan (John) of the Isle of Arran, Scotland, daughters Tammie Millar-Wallace (Jeff) of Ottawa, Jamie Millar-Dixon of Vancouver, son Ian (Christine) of Stoney Creek, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As a beloved Papa to Kelsie and Taylor, and Opa to Ryan and Danielle, he will be sorely missed. The family is most grateful for the care and support received from Dr. Susan Gick, Home Palliative Care, Dr. Scott Laurie at the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre, Dr. Benoit at the Neurology Unit of the Ottawa Civic Hospital, and John, who could always locate a soccer match for them to enjoy! We also wish to personally thank Dad's many close friends, acquaintances, the 151 bus stop club, House of Scotland customers and colleagues for their love, support and friendship. Friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean (between Bayshore Dr. and Baseline Rd.) on Sunday from 2 - 4 p.m. A memorial service will commence in the Chapel at 4:00 p.m., with a reception to celebrate his life to follow in the Maple Terrace Room. By respectful request, no flowers please however, in memoriam, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Condolences, tributes or donations may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com .

Dear Millar family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Jim you were truly a "Flower of Scotland" I could listen to you for hours as I shopped at "The House." You were such a true gentle-man and reminded me so much of my dear Papa from Glasgow. I will miss you.
Rest now dear Jim in His "House."

To the Millar family,
My deepest sympathy goes out to you for your loss.
Over the few years that I got to know Jim as a customer (for the Ottawa Citizen), he also became a friend. He always made me laugh and I enjoyed stopping by to catch up with his tales each week at Westgate. He was a wonderful man.
I know he will be missed deeply, but his memory will always live on with you.
Sincerely,

Jenny Hill

Jamie, Tammie, and Ian: My most sincere condolences on the passing of your Dad. I fisrt met Jim in 1977 when I was his sales representative for CKOY/CKBY-FM and although many things changed in our lives over the years we remained friends all this time. I rented the full highland outfit from him for my wedding and he included a copy of our wedding picture in his sample book over the years. In my view Jim never seemed to be afraid of taking some risks, and this simply proved it. I last saw your Dad when he was in the process of moving into his new store at Westgate. He seemed well and was enthusiastic about the future of the new shop. My friendship with your Dad was a pleasant aspect of my life. He was a nice man and a great guy and I, along with a great many others, will miss him.

Sincerely,

Clyde Ross

Farewell Jim

To this noble friend and manager at A & W Banks St., South, Ottawa 1966.

The drive homes > the late night shift.

To the chats re: Scotland.

Talking with you and Audrey when at your kiosk back when we had the Ottawa Winter Fair.

And then to find you again at your House Of Scotland in October 2005.

Merry Christmas Jim. I know that you spent Christmas with God and all your family who have predeceased you.

God Bless All.

Jim brought a part of Scotland with him to Canada and shared it with his many friends and customers. It wasn't just a transaction with Jim - it was more! He really got to know you and always took the time for a wee blether. He will be sadly missed by all my family and the Ottawa Scottish community.

April and I will always remember lots of laughter and fond memories with Jim and Audrey when the four of us would meet at Highland games and discuss, debate and trade stories about the trials and tribulations of running our wee Scottish shops. All the best.

I was so touched by Mr. Millar's last days' struggle with the cancer. He was one of the most strong-willed men I've ever met. I'll remember him forever.

Jim will be sadly missed but his life has touched so many and has left us all with great memories. From my early days of piping, the lunch hours I spent in the store on O'Connor St. with you and Audrey and the kickstart that you gave our business...you will always be with us Jim.

Tammie; I was sad to hear of your Dad's passing. I shopped at the Sparks Street Store, where your Dad and I would chat while your Mom wrapped my latest Thistle Pottery purchase. What a lovely couple.
