James Monarch Obituary

James Edward (Sonny) Monarch, 93, passed away peacefully at the VA Nursing Home in Oxford, New York on September 10, 2025. He was predeceased by his daughter Michelle Monarch, parents James and Rose Monarch, sisters Edna (Pat) Reime, Dorothy (Dottie) Webber, Rosemarie Monarch, and niece Cynthia Tatti. He is survived by his daughter Paula (Louis) Monarch-Palmieri, sons James and William Monarch, Grandchildren James Giuditta, Cassidy, Richard, Matthew (Azhani) Monarch, and Mary Palmieri and three great-grandchildren, Nephews Neal (Virginia) Reime, Bill (Bonnie) Webber, brother-in-law Edward Reime and many friends.
Sonny was born November 10,1931 in Brooklyn, NY and was raised there with his family. Sonny served in the United States Army during the Korean War. When he returned from his Army stint, he started working at Varsity Transit as a school bus driver. This career spanned approximately 40 years. He also did charter bus runs and bartended in many an establishment to make ends meet. He married and relocated to Bellerose, Queens, where his children were raised. Sonny returned to Brooklyn for a good number of years and eventually moved upstate to live with his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter before needing to reside in VA Nursing home in Oxford NY.
Sonny enjoyed spending time with family and friends, particularly at the American Legion Michael A. Rawley Post 1636. During his Brooklyn years, you could find him there playing cards, having a cold one, mingling with other patrons, occasionally bartending and/or attending their many events. He was fond of Cowboy movies, linguine and clam sauce, Cadillacs and gold jewelry. As per his daughter Paula, he had his own Mr. T starter set.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to the VA Nursing Home staff in Oxford, NY for their excellent care of James and his family over the time he resided there.
