James Phillips Obituary
Born in Calhoun, GA on July 31, 1929 to the late J.W. and Lillie Henry Phillips, Jim was the youngest of eight children and the only boy. He graduated from Calhoun High School in 1946 and went on to attend Emory at Oxford and finish his undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia. After graduation Jim joined the Air Force and was stationed in Germany as part of the occupational forces where he edited the military newspaper and taught history and current events to fellow soldiers. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, Jim returned home and began his legal studies at Vanderbilt and later received his law degree from Emory University. He and Vinita, then expecting their first child, moved to Dalton where he began his legal career with Pitman Kinney Law Firm. He later joined the McCamy Law Firm where he enjoyed a long and successful career of more than 50 years.
Jim was a long time member of Dalton First United Methodist Church where he and Vinita were faithful members of the choir and he lead and taught a Sunday School Class. He was a person of deep faith who was devoted to bible study. In his later years he attended Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church and he missed going to church when he was no longer able. Yet, he continued to grow in the Grace of God, with whom he now rests.
Jim is survived by: his beloved wife of 65 years, Vinita Owens Phillips; four sons, Marc Phillips, Eric Phillips and his wife Frances, Todd Phillips and his wife Christy, and Dean Phillips and his wife Ginger; five grandchildren, Jamie Lou Lowe and her husband Kevin, Marc Taylor Phillips, Marshall Phillips, Nate Phillips, and Will Phillips; as well as numerous nieces and nephews including Phillip Boston and his wife Sharon with whom he maintained a close relationship.
The family will have a private funeral service and burial for Jim.

Vanity, it´s Rita Norville. I remember you and Jim in choir at DFUMC! You both contributed so much to our church! I also fondly recall outings with Ken and Dottie Boring . Sorry to learn that Jim is gone! I´ll be keeping you in my prayers! With much love, Rita
