James Phillips Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 28, 2025.
Mr. James Wesley "Jim" Phillips, age 77, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2025, in Canton, Georgia. Born on April 5, 1948, in Barberton, Ohio, Jim lived a life marked by deep faith, unwavering kindness, and a profound love for his family and community.

A devoted husband to Carolyn Elaine Phillips (Smithson), Jim shared a life of partnership and purpose that spanned over five decades. Their marriage was built on faith, mutual respect, and an unwavering commitment to one another. Together, they faced life's joys and challenges with steadfast love and resilience, creating a home that was warm, welcoming, and filled with laughter. Elaine was not only Jim's wife but also his closest confidant and dearest friend, and their bond served as a lasting example of devotion to their children, grandchildren, and all who knew them.

Together they raised two sons, Chad Jeffrey Phillips of Auburn, Alabama, and Craig Stephen Phillips of Altadena, California, who carry forward his legacy of integrity and compassion. Jim also welcomed with love his daughters-in-law, Carey Phillips and Alyson Granaderos Phillips. Carey, with her heart for education and service, and Alyson, with her warmth and creativity, each held a special place in his life and brought their own unique light to the family he treasured so deeply.

Jim was the proud grandfather of Ansley (20), Harper (18), Samuel (15), Ceiba (12), and Quioa (5), each of whom brought him immeasurable joy. He cherished every moment spent with them, whether at family gatherings, during holidays, or in the simple, everyday moments that made up the fabric of their lives. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Jerry Smithson, and by his nephew, Ian Phillips, whom he held close in love and respect.

Jim was the beloved son of William Lester Phillips and Robbie Lee Phillips (DuPree), both of whom preceded him in death. He was also predeceased by his siblings William Phillips, Linda Phillips, George Phillips, and Kenneth Phillips. Though their absence was deeply felt throughout his life, Jim honored their memory through the strength of his character and the love he gave so freely to those around him.

A lifelong Christian who trusted Jesus as his Lord and Savior, Jim's faith was the cornerstone of his life. It guided his actions and shaped the way he treated others-with grace, humility, and generosity. Whether volunteering in his community or offering a listening ear to someone in need, Jim lived out his beliefs with quiet conviction.

Jim had a gift for making people laugh and an even greater talent for making them feel seen and valued. His sense of humor was matched only by his wisdom and kind heart. Friends and family will forever remember his big hugs, warm smile, and generous spirit-hallmarks of a man who never hesitated to show up when it mattered most.

He found joy in simple pleasures: reading a good book, exploring new places through travel-especially cherished trips across Europe with close friends-and giving back through volunteer work that touched countless lives. But above all else, Jim treasured time spent with loved ones. Whether gathered around the dinner table sharing stories or playing with his grandchildren, he poured his heart into every moment.

Jim's presence left an imprint that will live on in the lives of everyone who knew and loved him. His legacy is one of laughter shared, burdens lightened, hands held during hard times-and above all-a life lived with purpose and love.

A celebration service to honor Jim's life is being planned for Sunday, December 21st in Canton, Georgia. Please hold this date with more details to come soon.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as a lasting reminder of the power of kindness, faith, and love.

Jim was wonderful to be around. He treated everyone with kindness and respect and was always willing to lend a hand. We have many cherished memories of grandkids birthday parties where Jim and Elaine were busy behind the scenes helping out. Whether playing a game with the grandkids or helping us navigate technology, Jim always shared his time and care without reservation. Jim was a person we greatly admire. He had a generous heart and goodness, and always demonstrated integrity and commitment to family, friends, and his faith.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Jim´s passing. I worked with him many years ago and found him to be all the characteristics mentioned in his obituary. He was kind; thoughtful; incredible in his work and respected by all his colleagues. I pray God will undergird his family with peace and comfort now and in the days ahead! Rest high on the mountain, my friend!
