James Sheehy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 22, 2025.
James (Jim) Gordon Sheehy of Redondo Beach, CA, beloved husband, father, grandfather, Navy veteran, engineer, and world traveler, died peacefully, and surrounded by family, on November 16, 2025, at the age of 84.

Jim was born in Windsor NY, March 9, 1941, to James Edward Sheehy and Shirley Baldwin Sheehy. He was preceded in death by siblings Terry, Paul, Annine, Brian, Susan, and Burchard.

Jim is survived by his wife of sixty years, Alexis; his children, James and Shannon; his grandson, Matthew; and his brother, Dennis.

Jim served proudly in the United States Navy from 1960-1966 and attained the rank of E-6 as a Fire Control Technician. He served aboard the USS Lawrence, USS Chicago, USS Ramsey, USS Columbus, and USS Talbot. His time in the Navy instilled in him a lifelong sense of discipline, duty, and quiet pride in service.

After leaving the Navy, Jim pursued a distinguished career as an aerospace engineer contributing to space exploration and national defense at Burroughs Corporation, Jet Propulsior Laboratory, Honeywell, and Northrop. His notable projects included the Viking Mars spacecraft and the MX ICBM Missile programs. Jim was known in the industry for his technical expertise,

Jim was an active member of Rotary International for sixteen years, embracing its commitment to service and community. He was also a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and celebrated 38 years of continual sobriety in September 2025. As an active member of the fellowship, Jim lived the AA core principles of Recovery, Unity, and Service.

Jim was also an avid world traveler and always ready to learn and experience new places and cultures. With wife Alexis always at his side, he visited all seven continents, 103 countries, and more than 500 cities.

But no life is without challenges. By 2012, Jim had developed a serious back condition. Rather than let it constrain his life, Jim started using a walker to continue traveling and to stay engaged with everyday life. A few years later, Jim upgraded to a "sport walker," which he used to complete the 2015 Los Angeles Marathon. Jim went on to complete another 5 marathons with his sport walker.

Jim will be remembered for his intelligence, perseverance, generosity of spirit, and deep devotion to his family. He lived fully, traveled widely, served honorably, and loved deeply. He will be missed beyond measure.
