It was very sad to hear of Jim's passing and my deepest sympathy and sincere condolences go out to the family and his many friends. Jim had an unwavering passion for Cricket and was always involved in some capacity whether on or off the field. Despite obstacles, he persevered to advance the game when many would have given up. The awards and recognition he received for the valuable contributions he accomplished over the years are truly deserving of a man on a mission!
I have a lot of pleasant memories of Jim as I got to know him when I played in Ottawa. Always soft spoken with a smile on his face, he was the gentleman in Cricket. I was fortunate to play in a couple friendly games with him, albeit in the twilight years of his playing career and they were fun; but more importantly, the role he played as a teacher and mentor to me as I took up umpiring. He was very knowledgeable shared it willingly and was never too busy to offer an explanation or interpretation of the law when asked. He was always undeterred from spectator calls in the pavilion when they did not agree with his decision. His decisions were fair and I can remember him saying on many occasions, the doubt always goes to the batsman. Be sure when you make the call.
Jim, I am thankful for our friendship, support and teachings you provided to me. On behalf of all the Cricketers and fans, we owe our gratitude for what you have done for the game that we enjoy and for the many more who will. You laid the foundation and you had a tremendous innings. The higher umpire has called and may you rest in peace. Thank you.

Jimmy will be remembered as a cricket stalwart in his days at all levels of cricket in Canada. My wife and I extend our condolences to the family for the lost of their love one. He was gentle in dealing with others and greeted friends with a smile.

As I can remember Jimmy was responsible for CCA secretary having a vote at CCA meetings. I will not forget the moment at the closing ceremony of CCA national tournament in 1994 held in BC. Jimmy as CCA president congratulated the players for their competitive spirit and camaraderie displayed during the competition. He followed by singling me out as a 65 year old representing Nova Scotia as manager/player. I was floored when he mentioned that I impressed him with my performance on the playing field. I walked away with a few awards presented by two current VP at the time, Ramesh Jagoo and Clifford Cox who presented me the player of the match award.

I prey our Lord accept him as the good sole that left us and comfort his family at this trying time.

Marcia and I would like to offer sincere condolences to Jim's family and other loved ones. I doubt that there is anyone who has made a greater contribution to the development of cricket in Canada. I had the privilege to work with Jim at the national level, provincially (in Quebec) and locally (in Ottawa). He always showed dedication and passion in all that he did. Jim will be greatly missed.

Wow, to me he was always "Uncle Chicks" who would go to Trinidad with my dad (his nephew) to watch cricket, I had no idea of all his accomplishments. He was too humble to ever speak of them, but it makes me quite proud to read it all. Both he and his brother Bal before him were exceptionally gifted and lived fulfilling lives. I am proud to bear the same last name. RIP Uncle Chicks, I hope Grandpa, Dad and Shas gave you an awesome welcome at the Gates!

To me Jimmy Siew was a gentleman who embodied the spirit of cricket and lived a life centered around his great love and passion for our noble game.

Many of us knew that he was a gifted player in his own right, but it was his contributions and his energy long after his playing days were over that we who love the game owe him our sincere gratitude and thanks.

As a junior cricketer, my memories of Jimmy were of a kindly, older gentleman who was always quick to offer a word of advice or encouragement to young players. I remember him showing me how to bowl an off-break when he was in his late 50s and being amazed at how he could still turn the ball square on the pitch and make it fizz. "It was all in the wrist boy..." he told me with a soft chuckle. He told me about his 100 wicket season and the century he scored (even he seemed shocked by that accomplishment :-) and how it was an record that would likely never get beaten with the new game format.

I will remember his smile and his ever-present chuckle. Under a somewhat gruff exterior lived a kindly soul who played a good long innings and has now earned his rest.

It is time to say goodbye and thank you to a great man and to his supportive family for all that he did for Ottawa cricket in a long life that was very well spent.

May the earth rest lightly upon you and may your spirit soar forever more. Rest in Peace Jimmy Siew.

Thanks Calvin...I remember Jimmy as an umpire during the national tournament in 1995. (I think it was '95). He gave me out then called me back and I went on to make 87 runs. The little time I spent with him I enjoyed. He was an interesting person to listen too. May god bless his soul.
