James Sinor Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Alexander Sinor who left us peacefully on November 4, 2024 at the age of 88 in Opelika, AL. He was born December 29,1935 in Franklin, Tennessee. Jim dedicated his life to education and begin his teaching career in Merritt Island, Florida. In 1967, he joined his parents Louis and Della Sinor in Ciudad Guyana, Venezuela. He became the Principal of Maria Travieso School which was established for the children of U.S. Steel employees. After more than a decade oversees, he returned to the United States to reside in Lafayette County Florida where he ended his career as a High School Principal and Administrator in both Mayo and Live Oak. He was an active member in Rotary Club for decades and received recognition for serving as a Mason for more than 60 years. He was predeceased by his wife of 41 years Elsie Layton Sinor. Jim is survived by his son Jim, Jr., his daughter-in-law, Donna and his beloved grandsons, Wesley, William and Winston Sinor as well as his great grandchildren, Ella, Sloane and Theo.

A celebration of his life will be held over the Christmas holiday with immediate family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Jim.

I remember being one the people privileged to be educated by him as teacher, substitute, and principal. He was such a kind and intelligent man. God rest his soul

Mr. Sinor had a huge influence on me. He welcomed me to his school and home with open arms. Of course it helped that Jimbo was one of my best friends.

What i took away from years of having Mr.Sinor in my life , was the importance of family and friends.

Even though he was the head of our school, he made sure that Jimbo and his mom were the center in his life. Never missed a meal of Jimbo´s mom´s cooking!

Made time for nine holes of golf after the school day was over. Seemed to also have time for Jimbo and his friends.

And was always positive.

Loved to see that he had a beard his entire life. I thought he was one of the more distinctive looking men with jet black always perfectly groomed beards.

Please celebrate a great man, parent and human being.

The world needs more Mr. Sinors.
