Mr. Smith was a kind and gentle man. "Estimate day" was never dull, but he taught us so much. It was our pleasure and quite an honor to work for him and be a part of the "Boots" Smith team. We will miss him.

I have been a part of the “Boots” family for over 10 years. Finding the words to capture the spirit of the man who was Sonny Smith is difficult to do. He was so much more than my employer, he was my friend. It was an honor to have known him. I talked with him daily; we shared many laughs, as well as tough decisions. I will miss him. He was a great leader and teacher, who knew when to be stern, as well as compassionate. I hope that his family will remember and take comfort in knowing that Sonny will live on in the memory of those his life has forever touched.

There will never be words to adequately describe Sonny Smith. But we can try. I have known Sonny my whole life. I grew up at Boots and have worked for him for 27yrs. I have seen him be hardcore and then turn around and give you the shirt off his back. He was the greatest boss and the best friend you could ever ask for. I and those he has helped over the years will miss him dearly. Jason, Sherry, Sunny Lynn ya'll are in our prayers and have our support. Thank you Sonny Smith for making the world around us a better place. You will be missed.

Sonny Smith Family:
Sonny was President of the Mississippi Trucking Association 1977-78. He was a strong leader and a powerful voice in the Legislature with his delegation from Jones County. He made numerous trips to Jackson to help with passing or killing of proposed motor carrier legislation.
Sonny was generous in helping MTA build a new state headquarters building. He funded a memorial to his father by having a meeting room named in his honor.
Sonny was popular on the national level as well as across the state. He attended numerous American Trucking Association Management Conferences.
I was in organization management for 42 years which means I have had 42 bosses------and Sonny Smith was my all time favorite. What a great guy and friend. Heaven is certain to have more fun with Sonny there.
Sincerest best wishes to the family.

Almost 13 yrs ago I came to work at GBBS. I was afraid to even speak to Mr. Smith with that gruff voice. Soon I learned to know the most kind hearted man I ever knew. Until the day before he passed away he asked me about my sick family members. I am truly sorry for the loss we all share but glad that I was able to really get to know him.

In ways big and small, your father's life changed our world and left it a better place. As you share the stories and the memories of how he lived his life and how much he meant, may you find comfort in knowing ... that he touched too many hearts to ever be forgotten. May you also know the deep sympathy and concern that is felt for all your family.

Sonny was one of a kind. Understood risk/reward like very few do. He stepped up when most were heading for the doors. I am glad to have been involved with him in making some of these decisions. Condolence to his family.

Sonny was one of a kind. He knew when to step up and take a calculated risk (when no one else would), and when to fold his tent. I was fortunate to have been involved with him in a number of these decisions. Condolence to his family.
