James J. Stollenwerk, 74, of Tarentum, died unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 23, 2007, in Alle-Kiski Medical Center, Allegheny Valley Hospital, Harrison Township, after becoming ill at home. Born Oct. 1, 1932, in Tarentum, he was a son of the late Joseph J. and Mildred (Fair) Stollenwerk, and had resided in Tarentum his entire life. For 30 years, he was employed by Dravo Corp., Pittsburgh, where he worked as a draftsman and construction worker. He was Protestant by faith. During the Korean conflict, he served in the U.S. Navy, aboard the USS Intrepid Aircraft Carrier. He was a member of the Tarentum VFW, Eagles and Moose and the Brackenridge American Legion. He graduated from Tarentum High School and Thaddeus Stevens Trade School, Lancaster. He enjoyed playing pool, reading books and crossword puzzles. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Etta J. (Jones) Stollenwerk; daughter, Denise (Jack) Zier, of Natrona Heights; son, Joseph J. (Amy) Stollenwerk, of Tarentum; two grandchildren, Justin J. Stollenwerk and Amanda Stollenwerk; and two sisters, Juanita Miller, of Butler, and Carol Jean Stollenwerk, of New York. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Jimmy Joe Stollenwerk. Relatives and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the DUSTER FUNERAL HOME INC., Tenth Avenue at Corbet Street, Tarentum, 724-224-1526. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home by the Rev. Robert B. Walker, pastor of First Baptist Church, Tarentum. Burial will be in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, with full military honors by the Tarentum VFW. Visit: www.dusterfuneralhomeinc.com.
