James Tamkin Obituary

PEORIA - Dr. James A. Tamkin of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., formerly of Peoria, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2011.

Dr. Tamkin was born on Oct. 24, 1942, in Chicago to Dr. Louis and Marilyn (Somach) Tamkin. He grew up in Peoria.

He attended Bradley University for his undergraduate degree and then went on to earn a master's degree in public health at the University of Missouri.

After attending medical school at Temple University in Philadelphia, he moved to Yuma, Ariz., to serve with the Public Health Service at Fort Yuma Indian Reservation. After two years in Yuma, he moved to Los Angeles, Calif., to complete his residency in both internal medicine and endocrinology at UCLA.

He was married to Fern (Silver) for 45 years. He had two children, Greg (Rachel) of Denver, Colo., and Jennifer (Joe Shumate) of Dubai; five grandchildren; one brother, Paul (Mary Kearns) of Peoria; one sister, Ellen (Robert Michalak) of Downers Grove; five nephews; and one niece.

Services were held on March 24 at Ner Tamid Congregation in Palos Verdes, Calif.

Contributions may be made to Rabbi's Fund, c/o Congregation Anshai Emeth in Peoria.

Jim was a very special friend in high school and college. He was so excited to attend the 50th RCHS reunion last August; He will always be remembered as such a wonderful husband, father, and doctor. My thoughts are with Fern,Greg, and Jennifer.

To all Jim's family....I am so sorry for
your loss. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers as you go through the grieving process. It was great seeing Jim at our class reunion in August, 2010.
