James Tozzi Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 24, 2011.
James Gerald Tozzi August 12, 1942 - March 21, 2011

Succumbed to complications of cancer at 68, after fighting a valiant effort to recover. Born in Brooklyn, NY to Alberta and John Tozzi, they subsequently moved to California to continue the family business where they resided the remainder of their lives. James attended Catholic grammar school and Garces Memorial High School before transferring to Bakersfield High School, graduating in 1960. Upon graduation he attended Fresno State College majoring in Viticulture and Business, beginning a third generation career in the produce business for the next 48 years. James was a member of Western Growers Association, The NRA, and various other produce organizations throughout the years. As a member of Bakersfield Country Club he enjoyed his golf and card playing "pals". He was especially proud of his hole in one at BCC. His most memorable times were spent at Mackey Bar, Idaho fishing with his Godfather and mentor John J. Kovacevich. He is preceded in death by his adored daughter Jacqueline Franconi (who was the light of his life) in 2002. James is survived by his wife Janice, son James John, grandson Gino Franconi, and son-in-law Tom. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Jacqueline Tozzi Franconi Memorial Preschool Garden at St. Francis Church, 900 H Street Bakersfield, CA 93304, or a charity of your choice. Services will be held Monday, March 28th, at 1:30p.m. (Note the time change) at St. Francis Church, 900 H Street.

Dear Jan:

I was so sorry to hear of the death of Toz. He and I were childhood friends on Arroyita Dr., through highschool. You may recall that I was in your wedding party. I was paired up with a good looking gal named Joyce Iskanian. After you guys got married, I went to lawschool and was never back in Bakersfield except for holidays, when I did not see Toz. His Mom had left the big house on the corner. I saw Jim at his mother's funeral. He said to my mom, "Regina, which one is this?" Toz did not recognize me, from my brothers, Bob and Jim. That made me sad. Admittedly, I had put on about 75 pounds. I did meet his (your)son, who looked just like Jim. Jim Tozzi was one of the most catalytic persons I ever met. When I drove around town, nothing was ever doing. When we got in Toz' 55 Chevy, every place we stopped there were girls, action and fights. Every story he told was a humerous. Great spontanaity. I kept up on Jim's doings through Fred Wynia who I saw at class reunions, but never saw Jim at one. I heard that you lost your daughter a few years ago. I also lost a son, Stephen, at 33, so I know the pain that you have experienced.

I will not be able to get to Jim's funeral as I now live in Laguna Hills, and practice law in Santa Ana. I loved your husband, and my old friend. Hopefully, he and I will meet again. Resquiat in Pace.
