Jan WYMA Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix on Jun. 5, 2012.
Jan Wyma
1928 - 2012
Jan Wyma passed away peacefully with his family by his side on 31st of May, 2012 at Victoria Hospital. Jan recently resided in Prince Albert, having formerly lived in both Candle Lake and Saskatoon. Jan is survived by his wife Opal Joan (nee Andahl); daughter Lynn (Randy) Braaten of Prince Albert, SK; son Kevin (Bindu) of Calgary, AB; grandsons Erik Braaten, Ian (Christie) Braaten of Saskatoon, SK, Alexander Wyma of Calgary, AB; granddaughter Jennifer Wyma of Calgary, AB; sister Ev (Evertje) Young of Calgary, AB; sister-in-law Eunice (Bill) Rossmo of Saskatoon, SK; brother-in-law George Slater and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Johanna (nee de Voss) Wyma in 1956 and Charles Wyma in 1964; sister Jo (Johanna) Aumack; sister- in-law Lois Slater and brothers-in-law Frank Aumack and Jack Young. Jan was born 10th of June, 1928 in Saskatoon where he was brought up and attended Tech High School. He had a musical interest that lasted several decades playing the tuba for the Boys Band, Sea Cadets Band (Unicorn), 23 Wing Band, Saskatoon Concert Band and Saskatoon Symphony. He joined the Saskatoon Fire Department in 1951 where he progressed up the ranks, retiring in 1988 as acting Deputy Chief. The first time he met Opal, Jan knew that he had met the love of his life. They were married 19th of July, 1952, just 4 months after their first date. He was a devoted and caring husband, and a supportive and loving father and grandfather. In his final months, nothing gave him greater joy than spending time with his beloved Opal. Together Jan and Opal undertook a major project in 1976, building a log cabin at Candle Lake, which included felling and transporting trees to their home site. This is where they spent their years of retirement enjoying the lake and living in their dream home for over 23 years until recently. Jan loved spending time fishing, camping and traveling around the country. Many trips were made across Western Canada. Jan enjoyed life as a snowbird and spent several winters in Arizona with Opal. Later on Jan enjoyed spending time with Opal exploring Victoria during the winter months. Jan was well known as a constant kidder. Nobody was exempt from his wit as all the hospital staff can attest to. He retained his positive attitude and sense of humour until the end, and was known for bringing a smile to everyone's face. The family thanks Dr. R.D. Parker for the many years he cared for Jan, the staff at St. Paul's Hospital, Dr. T. Smith-Windsor, Pastor Dennis Serfas, and the fantastic staff on the Palliative Care Ward at Victoria Hospital that cared for him with dignity, compassion and understanding these final months. Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, 9th of June, 2012 at Gray's Funeral Chapel, 575-28th St. West, Prince Albert, SK with Pastor Dennis Serfas, Director Spiritual Care, Prince Albert Parkland Health Region officiating. Interment will take place at Candle Lake, SK. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made on Jan's behalf to the Canadian Cancer Society, 54 - 11th Street East, Prince Albert, SK S6V 0Z9.
