Jane Cook Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 26, 2024.
Jane Yelverton Cook, 83, of Friendswood, Texas, went to be with her Lord on July 22, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

Born December 23, 1940, to Coburn H. and Kearney B. (Kate) Yelverton in Bay Springs, MS, Jane was one of nine children. She and her siblings remained close throughout their lives and enjoyed sharing holidays, reunions and extended phone calls.

Jane married William David Cook in January 1966. During their 58 years of marriage, the couple raised two children, Bruce and Dava, and lived together in Louisiana and Texas, ultimately landing in Friendswood where Jane was active in her church and a founding member of a long running book club.

She enjoyed the music of Elvis Presley and Charley Pride and passed her love of music along to her son, even going so far as to stand in line for concert tickets for him in 1984, a story she loved to tell.

She became a grandmother in 2003 and spent the next 21 years of her life as a loving Mamaw to Jack and Connor. They were her "sweethearts," and she was quick to show pictures and regale friends and family with stories of their latest exploits.

She was the ultimate team mom, den mom, Brownie mom, and PTA mom, and never missed a game, twirling competition, pageant, play or graduation ceremony of any of her children or grandsons.

Whether you knew her as Mrs. Cook, Miss Jane, Aunt Jane or Mama Jane, you could be sure that she cared deeply for everyone she met. She passed this caring nature on to her daughter who became a school counselor and continues her mother's legacy of caring.

Jane is preceded in death by father Coburn Yelverton; mother Kate (Hosey) Yelverton; brothers Hollis Yelverton, Mark Yelverton, and Toby Yelverton; and sisters Betty Cockrell, Marilyn Leggett, and Rachel Yelverton. She is survived by her husband, David Cook of Friendswood, TX; her son, Bruce Cook (Laura) of Austin, TX; her daughter Dava West (James) of Friendswood, TX; grandchildren Jack Cook, Connor Cook, J.R. West, Dallas West, and Dakota West; brothers Terrell Yelverton of Waynesboro, MS and Rev. Randall (Diane) Yelverton of Florence, AL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jane will be laid to rest at Old Mount Nebo Cemetery in Raleigh, MS, at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 3, 2024, with Rev. Randall Yelverton officiating the funeral service and interment. A memorial service will follow at Webster Presbyterian Church in Webster, TX, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jane's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

"Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 'Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.'" - Proverbs 31: 28-29
