Jane Wolf Hufft

I first met Jane many years ago when we both were studying at Pomona College. I graduated in 1964, she in 1965, and I didn't know that she died until I read the Pomona College Alumni Magazine tonight. Those many years ago she was bright, funny, questioning, compassionate, and liberal. We hadn't connected in the many years since graduation, but I have thought of her often since.

Oh that I had contacted her before she died. But so is life, I guess.

I still miss her anyway, remembering that curly hair, that pursuit of justice, that annoyance with those who didn't accept responsibility for helping to pursue justice.

I miss her so many years since I last saw her. We would have connected and laughed at how young we were those many years ago.

I first met Jane in my first job out of college as a teacher at Martinez Jr. H.S. in 1970. And, I was so lucky to have her on the faculty. Her teaching work ethic, classroom demeanor, and practice were exemplary and as such she was an excellent role model. She set high standards for her students and many achieved them. She was always consistent. She always unselfishly advocated for what was best for students. And she shared her expertise. And although I never worked on a day-to-day basis with her while she was an administrator, I could certainly see that she continued to be outstanding.
From the first weeks upon meeting her I found that she was already advocating for low achieving students, the civil rights of people and especially feminine rights. She was fair and stood on high moral ground. She never backed away from standing up for what was right, and was an outspoken and articulate critic in the face of the contrary.
As a person, it was a pleasure to have her in my company. She was intelligent, pleasant, and conversant on many subjects and a good listener, too. She was a great mentor, a wonderful person to have as a colleague, and it was a pleasure to have known her for over four decades. I will miss her.

Whenever Jane entered a room it seemed like sunshine had walked in. I first met her on a trip to Salt Lake City with the California Genealogical Society and immediately enjoyed her company. I stood in awe of her past as an elementary school principal and her then present life as a person who helped with court rulings for children who were in the system and needed help.

She was my teacher and editor for articles. The class she taught on writing a genealogy was superb. She knew more about organization, grammar and editing in her little finger than I will ever learn but she was always encouraging and enthusiastic with us students.

On a trip to Boston for a week of research at the New England Historical and Genealogical Society I enjoyed hearing all about her Cook research. And I am the very lucky owner of a quilt she made. I will treasure it and all my memories of her forever.
