Dr. Janet Louise Carter passed away peacefully with her family by her side early on the morning of November 25, 2022, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ at the age of 75. She was born in Elizabeth, NJ to Louis and Elizabeth Lautenbach on October 29, 1947. She loved to swim in the ocean, eat seafood and cheesecake, to go camping in National Parks and was an unwavering advocate for children and education. She earned her doctorate degree in vocational education from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ and earned her master's degree in Administration and bachelor's degree in science from Newark State College in Union, NJ. During her life she was an active parishioner in the Catholic Church, was President of the Sayreville Board of Education, member of the Middlesex Regional Educational Services Commission, and had been a troop leader for the Girl Scouts. Janet spent much of her career with the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical High Schools in Perth Amboy, East Brunswick, New Brunswick, and Piscataway. Earlier in her career she taught at Cedar Ridge High School, Monroe High School, and Hillside Junior High. She was the Vice Principal of Perth Amboy Vo-tech and proudly established a teen parenting, childcare and early education program at East Brunswick Vo-tech. Her favorite subject to teach was Science. Janet was predeceased by her parents, aunts, uncles, and her beloved granddaughter Harper Rose Reilly. Janet is survived by her children: Jeffrey Carter and his wife Jennifer of Marvin, NC; Jason Carter and his wife Christine of Howell, NJ; Shannon Reilly and her husband Robert of Tuscon, AZ; Colleen Carter of Sayreville, NJ; and Lauren Carter of Sayreville, NJ as well as her grandchildren: Jackson and Jonathan Carter; Amelia and Owen Carter; Kaylee, Alannah, and Emma Reilly; and Liam Carter. She is also survived by her brother Glenn Lautenbach of Toms River, NJ her niece Elizabeth Lautenbach Adams, nephew Glenn Lautenbach Jr., among many cousins, friends, students, and strangers with whom she openly shared her motherly advice. A committal service is being planned for Evergreen Cemetery in Hillside, NJ scheduling is forthcoming, contact the family for details.
