Janet Kidder Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 27 to Jan. 28, 2021.
Kidder, Janet Janet Kidder, age 78, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 24, 2021. She was preceded in death by her siblings Elizabeth Van Ens, Bernard Dreis, Thressa Northhouse, Alvina Vanden Band, and Gertrude Austof. She is survived by her sons Theodore "Ted" Kidder and Russell "Rusty" Kidder (Melissa Bedevia); grandchildren Cody Kidder (fiancee, Kelsey Peterson), Katie (Garret) Wolter, Hannah Kidder; twin sister, Joann Bui; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Janet was born at home with her twin sister, Joann, in Bryon Center, Michigan, making them the sixth and seventh of the Dreise family siblings. She graduated from South Christian High School, and soon after was married and became the mother to Theodore (Ted) and Russell (Rusty) Kidder. Janet learned to play the piano at a young age and was a wonderful pianist throughout her life. She was dedicated to her career, starting at the Grand Rapids Press working for display advertising, but eventually moving to Los Angeles in 1979, and becoming the Advertising Director of the Los Angeles Times. At the time, she had little qualifications for the position; however, she shattered all expectations through her strong will and fierce personality, allowing her to succeed. She became a jewelry connoisseur, and her knowledge of gemstones was profound. She would often joke using the saying, "she who dies with the most jewels wins," and she most certainly won. This passion was passed down to her granddaughter, Hannah, who will be pursuing a profession in gemology. Janet decided to move back to West Michigan when her first grandchild was born. After that moment, her life revolved around her three grandchildren. She had always maintained her Dutch heritage by finding joy in thrifting and collecting many different things - from teapots to dishes and various figurines. Shortly before her passing, Janet was able to attend the wedding of her eldest granddaughter, Katie, and learned of the engagement of her only grandson, Cody. Janet remained a follower of Christ throughout her life, allowing her to go Home to our Savior peacefully and without pain in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by family. A celebration of Janet's life will be held later this spring. In honor of Janet and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Saint Mary's Foundation, 200 Jefferson Ave. SE Grand Rapids, MI 49503. In the memo line, please include Janet Kidder's name and "Lacks Cancer Center." The family welcomes memories and messages in their guest book online at www.cookcaresgrandville.com.

Janet and I worked together at the LA Times. We became adopted sisters and shared many laughs and memories. She was always my go to person for advice about everything. Her beautiful smile, shining eyes and wise ways will be missed terribly. You will always be in my heart my dear friend.....Until we meet again.

It was a long time ago in a galaxy far away that Janet and I worked together at The Press. I was in the newsroom and she was, as we used to joke "on the dark side." But her curiosity, and interest in the news content of the paper transcended the requirements of her advertising job--always. We'd have terrific conversations about the tensions between the news "mission" and the advertising "business" which generally concluded with her reminding me she was paying my salary. She was a wonderful person.

Janet and I shared a granddaughter, Hannah Kidder. I enjoyed her friendship. Our families were connected for many years. I'll miss hearing her laughter. Her obituary was so nicely done. Ted and Rusty I'm sorry for your loss.
