Janet King Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 6, 2025.
Janet Lynn (McCallen) King

July 27, 1950 - July 12, 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Janet Lynn King, who departed this life on July 12, 2025, at the age of 74, following a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Born in Flora, Illinois, on July 27, Janet was the youngest daughter of Harold D. McCallen and Margaret D (Jendzeloski) McCallen. She grew up in Memphis, TN, a city she called home until her retirement from Belz Enterprises in 2015. Having once dreamed of becoming a nurse, Janet was an innate caregiver, providing comfort, nurture, and unwavering support to everyone around her.

A breast cancer survivor, Janet dedicated herself to helping other women through their own battles with illness, embodying grace, and resilience. Janet was a lover of art, and her room remained adorned with favorite paintings until her final day-a reflection of the beauty she saw in the world.

Janet was defined by strength, compassion, and unwavering devotion to her family. She is survived by her loving children, Christopher King, Stephen King (Linda), and Amy King; her brother, George McCallen; her niece and nephews, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren - each of whom carries her memory in their hearts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold, and Margaret McCallen; her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara (McCallen) and Lynn Powell; and her grandson, Cameron King.

A celebration of Janet's life will be held on August 13, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the Jackson Room at The Peabody Memphis. All who knew and loved Janet are warmly invited to join in remembrance and reflection.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation or to the National Breast Cancer Foundation - causes close to Janet's heart.

Our mother, our sister, our friend - Janet was a gift beyond measure. While our hearts are broken, we are forever grateful for the love she gave so freely and the legacy of love, courage, and kindness she leaves behind.

I treasure the memories of growing up with Janet and her family. We lived just across Quince Rd. from their house and the McCallens were an extension of our family. My brother, Carroll/Freddie, and I stayed with them when we returned for our 20th H.S. Reunion. Janet will always be a special friend. Prayers and hugs to her family.

Prayers for peace and comfort, Aunt Janet was a beautiful woman, with a strong and compassionate heart. The love she had for her family could be seen in every action. She was loved.
