Janet Shipp Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 28, 2021.
Janet Jones Shipp, beloved mother, devoted daughter, loving fiance, caring sister and aunt, loyal and unconditional friend, died December 9 at Norwalk Hospital, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was 64 years young.

Janet was born the daughter of Eugene Douglas Jones and the late opera singer Betty Jones of Wilton, CT. on June 22, 1957 in Zorzor, Liberia, West Africa. She was gifted and multitalented and mastered skills in both dance and music.

Janet grew up in a musical household nurtured by the influence of her late mother who sang all over the world. She was greatly influenced by a constant flow of all types of music including a lot of opera. So of course Janet sang with The Madrigals at Wilton Senior High School, the Wilton Congregational Church Choir, Music on the Hill and local shows.

She attended Middlebury College majoring in dance and danced in the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City for three years. Dancing was Janet's passion, but eventually she got her MBA at the University of Bridgeport. She worked at Glencore, an Anglo-Swiss multinational commodity trading company, where she worked for 34 years. As a dedicated employee she worked up to the last moments.

Janet was previously married to Nathaniel W. Shipp, and they had two sons together Wesley and Hunter. Janet was predeceased by two other sons, Nathaniel Wesley Elijah Ship III and Wesley Elijah Shipp who died in infancy.

Janet was an amazing and devoted Mother supporting her sons at sporting and school events, musicals and stage productions in Wilton as well as at their college events and graduations. She was able to seamlessly balance work and be a supportive mother. Janet was always very supportive to her friends and co-workers. She attended her high school and college reunions keeping those friendships alive over the years.

Some of Janet's favorite pastimes, beside singing, were attending live opera performances and having music surround her in the car. She was also a movie buff and knew every movie, every actor and actress in the musicals and classics. She also loved watching competitive ice skating.

Janet is survived by her father Eugene Douglas Jones, her sons Hunter Shipp and Wesley Shipp, her brother Jeffrey Allen Jones, her sister- in-law Joanne Levey Jones, her nieces Samantha Jean Jones, Korbi Banks and Brandis Noelle Dean, and her sons' grandmother, Gigi Van Dyke.

Janet was always very involved with her extended family, and enjoyed being with them for any occasion because her family and friends were very dear to her. Her sons showed her love, strength and kindness while caring for her. They were heroic throughout her illness and she greatly appreciated everything they did for her. Her besties Sarah, Maggie and Beth were never far from her side. Throughout her illness they were in touch daily….she will be missed.

Janet was engaged to be married to her college sweetheart Curtis Singleton of Savannah, Georgia and was looking forward to "sitting and holding hands and growing old on the sand together at the beach."

A memorial service will be held at the Wilton Congregational Church in Wilton, CT. 70 Ridgefield Road on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 11a.m. Details for on line streaming of the service will be made available soon.

Dear Doug, This was so beautiful. I saw it all. You were so strong and had such dignity and held everyone together in such a beautiful way. Jeffrey is so handsome and was so good to call me. Thankyou Jeffrey 1000 times for calling me. I never heard a best friend speak so beautifully about her best friend.. I heard from darling Janet so often when I would ask about you, and she never said a word about herself. I will call you, but in the meantime, my arms are around you with the love of a sister to a brother. I loved seeing all the Children. You and Betty and Janet and Jeffery are part of me forever. I love you with all my heart, marcia

My heart goes out to Hunter and Wesley, to all of Janet's family, and to Curtis. She was remarkable. Janet and I were classmates at Middlebury College. From the first, I admired her grace, her intelligence, her strength, and her kindness. I remember watching her dance-gravity did not seem to affect her! She had an innate sense of rhythm and how to express herself through movement. I made it through my one dance class thanks to Janet's kindness in practicing with me. When my mother looked through our Class of 1979 yearbook, she stopped at Janet's senior photo and said, "This is the most beautiful woman in your class." And she was-beautiful inside and out. As others have said, my most indelible memory from our 40th reunion is the storytelling event where Janet spoke of her reconnection with Curtis, her beloved college boyfriend, and Curtis then stood up and said he wasn't going to let her go this time. We all cried and their happiness filled us all with joy. Thank you for your friendship, Janet. You inspire me even now to be a better friend. Godspeed, Janet

To the Jones and Shipp families, Curtis, and dear friends of Janet, I am so deeply sorry for the loss of such a beautiful life. I met Janet (and family) in 1963. I baby sat Janet and Jeff from `63-65 until I left for college. As an adult, I saw in Janet the fine character of both her mom and dad. We were in touch through the years. The world is a better place because of her presence and we are all better and increased in some manner because she touched our lives.

To the Jones Family, the Shipp Family, and to my long time football teammate and friend of more than 42 years, Curtis Singleton, all of you have my most sincere and deepest condolences and prayers at this time in our loss of Janet. I was one of those friends from Middlebury that would see Janet at our reunions. Our last reunion, our 40th, was for some reason extra special. The weather was extra beautiful there in Vermont. The spirit of those that attended that particular reunion was extra joyous. And to add to that weekend there, Curtis and Janet had announced their engagement. There was a gathering of students from our class that weekend at the campus sports arena, the Field House, where the hockey and basketball games were played. The gathering was to allow any student who wanted to share a story about their life to do so. Among the many there, Janet was one that spoke. One of the things Janet shared was how absolutely happy she was to "finally" be engaged to Curtis Singleton. She was just beaming all over. They both were. So to hear about Janet´s transition was, among so many things, such a disappointment, that those two great individuals and dear friends of mine, would not have the opportunity to finally be wedded in marriage. Well, in spirit I know that they were already and that they always will be. Janet, you will be missed! I´ll see you at the resurrection!

Janet was amazing at every turn. She supported her parents in the third stage of their lives with every once of her being. I will miss her example of how to live a compassionate life benefitting others. Peace

Janet was a rare diamond from Zorzor, a daughter of a rare family, and she lived up to her royalty. I already miss our daily talks. I know in my heart that I will see her again...because I always do.
