Janet D. Slater

Slater, Janet D. age 80, of Grosse Ile passed away Wednesday morning. Jan was born in Waupaca, Wisconsin on June 26, 1937, daughter of Paul and Stella Peterson. She graduated from Waupaca High School in 1955. After she joined the Navy and travelled the world, she moved to Wyandotte MI, where she met and married Jonathan Hugh Slater. The Slaters moved to Grosse Ile in 1967. Jan loved playing golf, she was a member at West Shore for over thirty years, served as the first women on the board of directors and ran the junior golf program for a time. Jan loved bowling and played in countless leagues for over forty years. Jan loved taxes, calculating them - not paying them. After her children moved on to college Jan began to work for accountant, Dick Carter where she rediscovered her love for numbers. She volunteered for AARP to do taxes for seniors who needed help. Jan loved to travel, in the Navy, besides playing third base for her division softball team and parachuting, she was able to see the world. She would often comment how a girl from the little town of Waupaca was able to see the world in the Navy. Her love for travel was reborn when she joined the Yellow Birds. Jan enjoyed many trips and countless friendships gained through the Yellow Birds. Jan loved her church, she was a member of Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church since 1969, she enjoyed serving as a deacon, elder and official co-counter for offertory with Sue Quinn. Jan cherished every moment and relationship gained from her church. Jan Loved her family. Jan is survived by her children: Sara (Steve) Tiszai of Wyandotte, MI; Paul (Tina) Slater of Onsted, MI; Granddaughters: Majerle Slater and Karah Slater; her sister: Lil (Larry) Hanson, of Stevens Point, WI. She was preceded in death by her husband Jonathan Hugh Slater, father and mother, Paul and Stella Peterson; brothers Kermit Peterson and Paul Jr.; and Special friend Walt. Jan was a lover of life. She had countless friends and extended family from Grosse Ile to Waupaca. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, March 4 at 1 pm at Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church with Reverend Dr. Philip J. Reed officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted for a charity to be named later.
