Janet Surles Obituary
Janet Zilliken Sewell Surles of Chicago, Illinois, passed peacefully on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at the age of 81.
Janet was born in Flint, Michigan, to Ruby Gene (née Beaver) and Jules Hunter Zilliken. After Jules' passing, Ruby Gene married Richard (Dick) Sewell, who lovingly helped raise Janet with her mothers and the sisters who followed.
Janet's love of learning and life led her to earn her bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and later her master's degree from Northwestern University.
From an early age, Janet radiated joy and energy. At just twelve years old, her passion for dance blossomed into a studio she opened in the basement of her childhood home. Her recitals became neighborhood events-gatherings where music, movement, and laughter filled the Sewell household and where children found not just a teacher, but a guide and friend.
That spark never dimmed. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Janet became a celebrated figure in dance and fitness. She owned and operated a dance studio in Bolingbrook IL for 15 years. With her vibrant presence, she led both children and adults into the delight of movement, judging competitions and inspiring countless lives through the rhythm and joy she embodied.
Janet's resilience and grace were especially evident in her later years. Through many challenges and illnesses, she was tenderly supported by her beloved son Chad and his wife Kelly, whose devotion surrounded her with comfort and dignity.
Janet is deeply mourned by her sisters-Joey, Jean, and Judith-who together with her formed the circle of the four "J's," now missing their eldest. She is lovingly remembered by her sons, Chad and Shane; her cherished daughter-in-law Kelly; and her treasured grandsons, Rigel and Sebastian.
The three remaining "J's" will join with Chad and Kelly in a private celebration of Janet's life. They ask for your prayers of gratitude-for the light Janet brought, the beauty she shared, and the many blessings she gave to our world.

Jan was always a blessing to be around, her having a smile to share always put me in a cheerful mood for the day. Charlotte Koszuta who knew Jan through Woodview school where my sons Joey and Jayson attended. Jan will always be remembered in my prayers.
