Janis Brustares Keyser
August 4, 1957 - August 1, 2022
Boca Raton, Florida - Janis Brustares Keyser, 64, passed peacefully on August 1, 2022, at home with her family. Janis is survived by her husband, Greg, daughter, Mallory (Lacey Tatro), son, Spencer (Hannah), grandchildren Campbell and Miller (Mallory), her mother, Janet Brustares, her sister, Julia Frow, and her sister-in-law, Beverly Keyser. A native Floridian, Janis was born in Miami, Florida on August 4, 1957, to her parents, Janet and James Brustares.
Janis was a kind, compassionate and loving person whose goodness and caring shone through in all aspects of her life. The most important thing in Janis' life was her family. She was a beloved wife and best friend to Greg as they shared 40 beautiful years together. Janis was a beloved mother to Mallory and Spencer as she nurtured, supported and deeply inspired her entire family.
Janis grew up in Miami and received her undergraduate education at Florida State University, graduating summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa in 1979. She then attended the University of Florida College of Law and became an avid Gator fan. It was in Gainesville that she met Greg and they fell in love. In law school, Janis was a member of the Moot Court Team and at the annual State Moot Court Competition her team took home the Best Brief award. Janis returned to South Florida following law school, moving to Palm Beach County where she would pursue her legal career, establish strong ties to the community, and start a family with her husband Greg.
Janis' father James, a man who greatly influenced her and wanted to be a lawyer himself, suggested she pursue a highly sought-after Federal Court clerkship. Janis was blessed to serve as a law clerk for two outstanding jurists: United States District Court Judge for the Southern District of Florida, the Honorable Jose A. Gonzalez, Jr., and Florida Fourth District Court of Appeals Judge, the Honorable James C. Downey. Both clerkships enriched her life and helped Janis continue to develop her passion for legal research and writing. While in private practice in 1996, Janis earned the distinction of Florida Bar Board Certification in Appellate Practice. She had a successful career in private practice beginning with the Jones Foster law firm and continuing through to her final position with Billing, Cochran, Heath, Lyles, Mauro & Anderson, P.A., prior to being appointed Judge. Janis had a true love of the law and passion for her career, a love and passion that she shared with both of her children.
In 2006, Governor Jeb Bush appointed Janis to the Palm Beach County Fifteenth Judicial Circuit County Court bench where she served from April of 2006 to June of 2011. In June of 2011, Governor Rick Scott appointed Janis to the Palm Beach County Circuit Court bench, where she served until her recent retirement in June of 2022. Janis was always humbled and thankful for the opportunity to serve the citizens of Palm Beach County and the State of Florida for 16 years in the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit with so many outstanding colleagues and friends. Janis was also humbled and thankful to be recognized by the South Palm Beach County Bar Association with their Distinguished Jurist Award in 2015. Janis always had genuine concern for all the people and cases before her as a judge and recognized the impact her decisions may have on their lives.
Janis led a full and rich life and was always able to successfully balance her family and career. Janis cared deeply about her many close friends. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed gardening, traveling, daily walks, spending as much time with her golden retriever grand dog Bear as possible, and playing tennis with good friends who inspired and motivated Janis. Janis was a person of deep faith.
Janis and Greg were blessed to have found each other and had such a wonderful family and life together. Janis was at peace knowing that her children, Mallory and Spencer, had also found the right person and have loving families with bright and happy futures. Janis was complete and at peace having recently become a grandmother to two beautiful baby boys, Campbell and Miller. The family is grateful for the time they had together with Janis on this earth. Janis will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends, and she will always be loved and remembered fondly.
