I had the great pleasure of attending AIT with Jared at Ft. Sill, OK. We were in the same class and I remember his antics as if it were yesterday. He truly was a man's man, tough as nails but with a heart of gold. I thank God I got to know you my friend. You are the epitome of the selfless warrior. So I was reading "See you on the High Ground" and all I could think of is you dodged some real bullets here. It has some good stories but man if they only knew all the others. The ones that only the people that were there know. So far its a great read but it will never be able to capture all of you. Had to know you to understand that. Miss you bud

I never knew of Jared Monti, until this month, when Len Sandler sent "See You On The High Ground". I laughed. I cried. I was deeply moved by an outstanding individual and by all of the people he had touched. Absolutely amazed at how many he still influences.
In truth, we get a glimpse of God and his mysteries through a blessed man.
Each of my shows are dedicated to fallen heroes, usually taking only about 10 mins.
Tomorrow is different, because Jared is so different and wonderful.
The entire show is dedicated to an outstanding man, who touched so many lives. If anyone who was in Sgt Jared Monti's unit or knew him, please join us and call in with your own stories, Tuesday, 2pm - 4pm EDT to 917-889-3675

The first day I met Sgt Monti, I woke up to his voice outside the barracks. It was his first day with 3/71 RSTA, he was cleaning up the Fister platoon, getting a few bad apples on the right path. He had them in a one line formation, marching down fourth st singing the I'm Joe Joe the duck cadence. Fellow soldiers know how the rest of that cadence goes as it is not appropriate to post. I miss you Jared, I miss your barbecues and your guidance on being a leader!

Happy birthday, Bud. WOW!! 36 years. It seems like yesterday that I first daw you in Quincy Hospital. What a joy you were. A happy smiling child who grew into an incredible man but never lost that great smile. I still think about you every minute of every day. You have made me so proud but I am still astonished when I say that you are my son. Your greatness has touched people all across the nation and from every walk of life. The tributes and accolades never seem to end. You have inspired everyone from school children to generals and politicians.
But, Jared, you will always be my little boy. On your hotwheels, jumping your bicycle, playing soccer, baseball, and basketball, fishing with Dad, or just our everyday interactions. Those are my favorite memories.
Now you sleep with the angels and protect us from above. But your spirit remains here on earth winding it's way throughout the living and working it's magic. God has taken you to do His work from heaven and you are doing that work very well.
Blessed be you, my son. Pray for me too and soon I will join you that we might be together for eernity. All my love, Dad.

Hi Bud,
Well, Pal, you now reside with the giants of history. Your hall at Fort Sill is a magnificient structure. It will train our future Fisters better than any in the world. Jared Monti Hall is a gigantic structure surrounded by Halls named for some of the greatest generals this country has ever seen. And, amidst them all is a Hall dedicated to a lowly Staff Sargeant- Y-O-U. What a tremendous honor.
I would rather have you of course but under the circumstances, just think of all of the future 13F's that you will inspire.
Need some help with a fellow 3-71 trooper who was severely injured by an IED. If you can, watch over SFC Hackett. He is in Bathesda right now and needs your healing grace.
Planning for Niccole's wedding now. I know that you will be there with us. Keep watching over the family as I know that you have been. As always, my heart and soul are with you. Much love until we meet again~ Dad- 143

Hi Bud. WOW! What an event your Aunt Trisha and Uncle Russell put on for you. You would have been so proud. About 500 motorcycles all riding in your name. I led the way in your truck for a while and Uncle Russell was close behind on your Harley. There was a great crowd and we raisd a considerable sum for military charities. I would have loved to see you there on your Harley leading the parade.
Now it's on to the bridge dedication next Sunday. You know that bridge on 44 where we used to fish and where you and the other crazy survivalists ended your canoe adventure. LOL
No one will ever forget you. You now have an intersection, a playground, a bridge, a workout center, 2 scholarships, and soon a building dedcated in your name. Not to mention a monument in SC and at least 4 children who bear your name. You are loved by many and missed by many, many more.
Keep the good works and blessings coming, son. This world needed your inspiration and your message has spread nation wide. Always try your hardest, never give up, and do the right thing are phrases people now use on a daily basis.
I miss you, my son, and think about you every minute of every day. By the way, you also have a new niece. Joselyn Paige Monti-Alicea was born yesterday morning. Niccole and the baby are doing well.
Love you 4-ever, DAD

James, Thank you for the wonderful things you stated about my son. I, too, would gladly give the MOH back in a heartbeat to have him back again. If I could I would even trade places with him. I think about him everyday and still have many tearful days, miss him so very much, sometimes intolerable. But Jared wouldn't have any of this amd would tell me to get over it and get on with my life. I think I will be going to Ft. Drum in June - will you be there? I would love to meet you, keeping in touch with the soldiers that knew him helps more than you know and they say it helps them too. Stay safe, take care and God bless.

Wow, Jared.
It's been a long time since I've put words in this book. Not since I got the news in Iraq in 2006. I cried like a baby that day. Miss you like crazy; think about you a lot and are proud to tell others about a FISTER and my old friend being awarded the MOH. You are an inspiration to the young 13Fs...but you were an inspiration to our young FISTERs long before Afghanistan and your heroic actions on that day. Many of us who came through the ranks with you in the early days, remember you...as you were back then. We all laugh about the old days; AIT, Korea, training in the field to "go to war" and enjoy those memories. We would gladly request that the MOH be returned so we can have our friend...our BROTHER back!!! But it is what it is and we are all proud and honored to have known and served alongside you. I love you and miss you, Brother.
I'm staring at the deserts and mountains of Afghanistan as I write this; in my tenth month and almost ready to go home. I brought you over here with me, on a bracelet and, Brother, I am bringing you home with me. I know that your Mom and Dad are so proud and my heart is with them and the entire family. I remember you; and you will never be forgotten...NEVER!
Paul and Janet, thank you for bringing Jared into this world. Without that I would have never had a wonderful friend and a great Warrior to serve beside. Thank you so very much. I will always be here for you anytime anywhere.

While researching a few things this morning, I discovered this sad, yet inspiring news.
I met Jared Monti while assigned to C/3-319th AFAR at Fort Bragg, NC. He quickly became one of my best friends at Bragg. After I left the Army in '99, as is often the case, the two of us lost touch. Though I did think of him from time to time (typically with a smirk while recalling some of the good times we shared).
Now, I have learned that my friend has passed. I am saddened greatly by this news, yet at the same time, I feel a tremendous pride at having known and worked with such a tremendous soldier.
The loss of Monti is truly a great loss to all who knew him.
Rest in peace, my friend. I am proud of you.
March 29, 2010
For Jared...
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Happy Christmas Bud. I visited your grave this morning and left you another wreath. You continue to inspire many with your story and your exemplary life. I will continue to spread your story to all who will listen in hopes that we can create a better world. Little did you know that your actions, not only on that fateful day but throughout your life, would have such a great influence on so many. God truly had a purpose for you and you fulfilled it perfectly. May you rest in peace knowing all the good that you have accomplished in your all too brief life. With love forever- Dad

Hey Monti,
I just wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas. We were E-4's together in the 82nd and had many good times doing the things that FISTERS do best!! I know we lost touch after I left Fort Bragg but you will never be forgotten. I've talked to some of the guys from Charlie Battery and they can't believe that you earned the MOH, but they all say that you were the type of guy that would do anything for your fellow soldier. You were in our platoon for like 2 weeks when you came back from Korea, but when we got in that brawl in the parking lot at Pirates, you were the first guy jumping on somebody. You earned everyone's respect real quick that night. That's the type of soldier and friend that you were. Well brother, I'm proud to have served with you and lucky to have known you. God Bless and Rock Steady Fister!

I never had the honor of meeting Jared Monti while he was alive, but after working very closely with his aunt, Annie Eagles and her becoming a very, very, dear friend and "sister" I must say, I feel as though I know him. I have been blessed with her memories, pride, sadness of her family's loss and her laughter and smiles, her beaming pride when she speaks of very fond memories of Jared. I cannot say how very honored I am to have met him through Annie. I keep him in my heart and mind and "beam" as well when I look at his photo and think of this "wonderful man" and how he has entered the hearts of so many of us who did not have the honor of meeting him in life.

Paul,
you break my heart when I read your comments about your son. I can not image the pain in your soul, especially this time of the year. You need to know that your son's sacrifice touched the heart of many, many people. Long before the Medal of Honor, he was a hero for all of us. You need to take pride inn the fact that you raised such a great son and great American.
I know my words offer little comfort for your loss, but I will do my best to insure Jared's name will remain on the lips of as many people as I can inform. If ever you need an old man to stand by your side or just to offer a prayer for your strength, you can count on me.
I am sure it is far more difficult than I can comprehend, but you need to stay strong to insure you keep Jared's memory alive. As long as he is remembered he is truly not gone. May God give you the strength to continue on.

Hey Bud,
Well, another Christmas without you. I do miss you so much. The honors and tributes keep coming but they are so empty without being able to share them with you.
I visit your street corner almost every day for our daily chat and get to the cemetery as often as I can. I know that you are in a better place now and looking out for us from above. I think about you constantly and try my best to honor you with all I do.
Keep me in your heart as you are in mine and soon we will meet again. I'll see you on the high ground son. All my love to you- Dad

Happy Veteran's Day SFC Monti. As a resident of Taunton I'm proud to be reminded that heroes live among us. Maybe even as close as next door. Thank you for your sacrifice and may God bless you, your family and America.

I never met SFC Monti, but the story brought pride to my heart, and the goodbyes I read brought tears to my eyes. Sarge, I am proud to say I served in the same Army as you, and will never forget the actions of a true hero. Rest in peace soldier, you're in God's Army now! Carry on!

I did not have the honor of knowing or serving with this great American, but I know many like him. Jared represents the greatest attributes of mankind; one who willingly gives his all for others without question. I too, was a fire support specialist in the Army and served in the 75th Ranger Regiment for 8 years. I send my condolensces to his family, friends, and brothers in arms. I hate that most MOH recepients are posthumously awarded. His memory and actions must be preserved forever to remind us of freedom's cost. He died for all of us and our privilege of being an American. God Bless you Monti, SFC Bill Crews (USA,ret.)

Jared and I were in the same Fire Support School class together at Fort Sill, and served two years together at Fort Riley. Whenever my wife and I left town, Jared took care of our place. We were extremely close. We met again at Fort Bragg after his tour in Korea, but then lost touch after I left the army and moved away. This tends to happen all too often in the service.
It hit me like a bat to the face when I saw Jared's picture on national television and they said he had been killed. He was one of the most cheerful, upbeat people I have ever met. No matter how miserable the situation, it was almost impossible to be around Jared and not be happy. They must have looked far and wide to find a picture of Jared not smiling.
My deepest condolences to the Monti family. I lost my eight year old son to Batten's disease several years ago, but I can not say that I know what you went through. All I can say is that I feel proud and honored to have known such a great man. He earned the CMH every day of his life.

To the Monti Family and Charlie Witkus,
I am truly sorry for your loss and extremely proud to here that Jared was awarded the Medal Of Honor. I have spent an hour reading every message displayed on this site. What I've learned about Jared is that he was an incredible person and the perfect example of what a Soldier/Leader should be. My heart goes out to you all and I know that you are all proud to have been a part of his life.
I didn't know Jared. I'm from Taunton, Ma and I knew Charlie when I was in high school. Charlie was a friend of my sister and I found him to be a really good man. Charlie joined the Army and a few years later I did the same. It's obvious that Jared chose his friends wisely. I just want Charlie to know that naming his son after Jared is great honor and I'm sure Jared is proud.
To all that served with Jared:
I never had the opportunity to have served with Jared. After reading everyone's testimony I have learned that that is my loss. I am inspired by his actions and his leadership. In my 9 years of military service I had the honor of serving under some great leaders in the Army, most notably my Platoon SGT from the 25th I.D. SFC Jose Fernandez. I never encountered someone such as he until I learned about Jared. I'm sure you all will never forget him and will always be honored to have been able to call him your leader. If I could go back in time and try to be that leader it would most definitely model SFC Monti and SFC Fernandes.
SFC Monti, I have a 2 year old son and one of my wishes for him is to have people look up to him as others looked up to you and to know that their well being is in good hands. You truly are an inspiration and may god bless you. To the Monty's, family and friends, soldiers and Charlie Witkus stay strong and carry on Jared Monti's legacy. John Roberio

Happy birthday my son. Today you would have been 34 years old. Instead of celebrating though, I had to visit your gravesite. I cleaned up and I placed new flowers there and said a prayer for you. You were an amazing yourg man. You were everything I ever hoped you would be and more.
Now you are part of history. You no longer belong just to me and your family. You belong to the entire country and the world. You are a shining example of how humans were meant to be. Selfless, kind, compassionate, brave, strong, and giving. You always put others before yourself and lived the creedo "do unto others..."
You will be an inspiration to others for generations to come. In this sad way, you found a way to spread your message of good will to all of the world.
Soon I will be joining you on the high ground. I will kiss your hand and your feet. For you are truly he that was meant to be named JARED- Gift of God.
My love will be yours forever and ever. "See you on the high ground"- Dad

Happy Birthday Jared! I am so proud to be your cousin. It was an honor this week to listen and meet all your "boys". You were surrounded by so many that loved you way beyond our HUGE family. It was great to know how many lives you touched. Our families knew you would be great and now so does the rest of the world. Until we meet again, love you. Your cousin Kimberly.

To the Monti Family:
My deepest sympathies.
I never knew your son but I wish I had.
I have always taught my Soldiers about Medal of Honor recipients, often sketching or making terrain models to illustrate the challenges each of these heroes faced in their pivotal moment. But, I guess serving in a time of war makes you count your Blessings a little more carefully.
So, when it came time to teach my guys about your son and his moment, I did my absolute best to tell them all I had learned about Jared and his devotion to his men, and his heroic efforts that day.
Now, your son has become an inspiration to my Soldiers and me. We're all better because of him.
I believe a little of him will live-on within each of them.

I have had a long life and many wonderful experiences because of a guy like your son who saved me in Viet Nam. I would not have had two wonderful daughters and a life if he hadn't gone above and beyond . There is no way to compensate you for lyour loss, it is huge, but as Americans were are in this thing together, and as men we are to defend our women and children and your son did just th at. Thank you from me and my children and all the people I have been able to help since then as a way of paying some one else back. Thanks and God Will Bless You
