Muncie - Jason Michael Paul Cooper, 54, of
Muncie, Indiana, passed away on November 14, 2025, at home, surrounded by his family. Born on June 28, 1971, Jason lived a life that was entirely, unapologetically his own-stubborn, brilliant, ornery, and unforgettable.
An avid gun enthusiast and collector, Jason could talk for hours on the subject, always emphasizing gun safety. He often shared his wisdom of historical facts, firearm expertise, scientific knowledge, and what it means to be a patriot at heart. He was a proud graduate of Southside High School, Class of 1990. He was effortlessly brilliant, and believed in learning something new every day- a mindset he carried into his studies at Ball State University and beyond. He was "smarter than the average bear" and could have an intelligent conversation with anyone he met.
Jason was a member of the Delaware County Reserve Police, he worked at General Motors, loved his red Trans Am and his motorcycle, and carried a pocketful of catchphrases he delivered with his signature grin: "It is what it is," "Let me study on that," "Say," and "That's what she said." He also lived by his personal mantra: Never leave home without your pocket knife, wallet, and hat. If you knew him, you can probably hear him saying all of these adages right now.
He was a fighter in every sense of the word-stubborn to the end, tough beyond measure, and determined to live life on his own terms. But beneath his exterior was a man with a huge heart who loved fiercely, was a great cook, loved hunting, enjoyed the simple things in life, and was in the best way- a caveman. He stayed true to himself regardless of his surroundings.
He leaves behind the greatest pride of his life: his two daughters, Katelynn Cooper, and MeKayla (Michael) Jennings, and his granddaughter Annalise Jennings, who brought him pure joy.
He is survived by the mother of his children, Kimberly Sherwood; his stepsons, Clayton Sherwood and Colt Rutter; his father, Michael Cooper; his mother, Sherry (Bruce) Orman; his sister, MeKell (Michael) Gilbert; his niece, Gabriella Gilbert; and his step-sister, Leslie Orman. He also leaves behind his aunts Linda Springer, and Carla (David) Upchurch, and his uncle Phillip (Diana) Thornbro.
Jason is preceded in death by his grandparents Carl and Anna Cooper; Robert and Louise Thornbro; his uncle Randy Thornbro, and his stepsisters Lonna (Martin) Kirkwood; Laura Ortman, all of whom he loved dearly.
Jason selflessly chose to donate his body to the IU School of Medicine for Scientific Research. In lieu of funeral arrangements, the family will be hosting a celebration of life on Jason's birthday, June 28, 2026. In the meantime, the best way to honor him would be to raise an American flag in your front yard. He was a patriot through and through.
On behalf of Mr. Cooper, his family would like to extend their deepest gratitude and appreciation to his caregivers Loretta, his mother Sherry Orman, and Chaplain Phil for their compassion and support during his final season.
Jason lived boldly, loved fiercely, and leaves behind a lifetime of stories, laughs, and memories his family will cherish forever. In true Jason fashion, he would want everyone to put on some camo, shoot a gun, and raise a glass in his honor.
