Wirtz - Jason Kyle Halm - "Hammy" loving son, husband, father & grandfather age 54, of
Wirtz, VA formerly of Webbs Mills, NY passed unexpectedly following a sudden medical event on Saturday, September 20, 2025.
Hammy started in the fire service as a volunteer with the Southport Volunteer Fire Department in 1987, later joining the Webbs Mills Volunteer Fire Department, both located in Chemung County, NY. Throughout his time in the fire service, he earned the admiration of both his colleagues and community alike for his steady leadership, deep knowledge, and unwavering commitment to service. He believed in lifting others up, freely sharing his experience and guidance with those following in his footsteps.
Jason served as the Fire Chief of Webbs Mills where he implemented a successful 4-H junior firefighter program that bolstered department recruiting efforts as well as developing & founding their fire scene rehab program. Jason was the career Fire Chief for Sikorsky Aircraft in Horseheads, NY before relocating to Franklin County, VA. After moving to Virginia, Jason volunteered his time with the Burnt Chimney Vol. Fire Department, Red Valley Rescue Squad, and was a past Assistant Chief with the Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire Rescue.
Beyond the fire department, Jason gave generously of his time and talent to the community. His kindness, humor, and dedication to helping others left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Jason was employed by Roanoke Regional Airport as an Operations Specialist, a job he loved. He was also owner of Handy Hammy Home Improvement in Wirtz and past owner of English Gardens Landscaping in Pine City, NY.
Hammy was a devoted firefighter, mentor, and friend to many, dedicating his life to serving others and making his community a better, safer place. His ability to navigate challenging emergency calls, mentoring those around him, or volunteering countless hours to help strengthen any organization he was involved in is unmeasurable.
His gift to serve was evident in all he did. This passion made him invaluable in all aspects of the fire service. He had a natural talent to recruit; those called to serve and mentor them as well.
Despite the many roles Jason filled between the fire service and work, the ones he cherished most were husband, father, grandfather, and son, always working to provide the best for those he loved most.
Jason is survived by his son Kyle (Heather) Halm with grandson Maverick of Shepherdstown, WV, daughter Rebecca Halm with granddaughter Ember, wife April Halm of Christiansburg and his beloved mother Roxanna Halm of Wirtz, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. Jason was preceded by his dad Quentin Halm.
In memory of Hammy and in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local Fire Departments and Rescue Squads.
His family will receive friends 1-4 p.m. Friday, October 10, 2025 at Webbs Mills Fire Department (18 Firehouse Lane, Pine City, NY 14871).
