1959 ~ 2013
Jay Franklin Andrus passed away from a stroke on October 7, 2013, at the U of U Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born on June 24, 1959, in Murray, Utah to parents DeVon Franklin Andrus and Mary Esther McAdam Andrus. His mother passed away when Jay was 9 months old; he was cared for by Ralph and Barbara Smith as an infant, and then raised by his father and new mother, Joanne Gano Andrus. Jay grew up in Iowa, Michigan, Utah, and Wisconsin, graduating from DeForest (Wisconsin) High School. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Hawaii, and later graduated from BYU with a degree in Health Science. He married Mami Tomomura in the Salt Lake Temple on June 15, 1990. He and Mami moved to her native Japan, where they lived for all but one of their 23 years of marriage, and where they raised their three sons: Anthony Sho, Joshua Ryo, and Matthew Kyo.
In Japan, Jay taught English in junior high, high school, college, and privately. He served in many church callings through the years, and was currently the Branch President of the Kushiro Branch. He was a talented athlete and musician, and composed and performed many musical numbers in various settings. He and his wife are well known for their devotion to each other and to their boys, as was Jay's sense of humor and his friendship and interest in others. Jay was preceded in death by his parents, DeVon and Mary, and is survived by his wife, children, mother Joanne, and ten siblings: Marie Scott (Dan), Robyn, Dawn, Kyle (Marian), Mark (Bonnie), Sylvia (Tom Breu), Ford (Kim), Brooks (Nancy), Sherman (Vicki), and Joy Yang (Mike).
A viewing will be held at the LDS Chapel at 430 South 700 East in Orem, Utah at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2013, followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. He will be interred in the Orem City Cemetery. Online condolences may be given at www.premierfuneral.com

Jay was a dear friend. He taught me how to have fun again; after several years of stress in my life, I had forgotten how. One day when I was home recuperating with a badly broken toe, he stopped by to see how I was doing. While elevating my foot, I was fretting over housework not being done and commented, "I need to scrub my sticky kitchen floor." Jay said, "No, you need to elevate your foot and forget about the floor." When I told him my dad was coming over soon and would make comments about the floor, Jay said, "Then hand him the mop!" It was a life-changing moment, believe it or not! I finally started taking better care of myself and enjoying my life more. Thank you, Jay, for your friendship and the impact you had on my life! You are missed!

Elder Andrus was one of the missionaries who taught me the discussions when I was baptized into the church along with Elder Lance Sargent in Halawa Ward in Hawaii. So sad to see this. He was a very devoted missionary. His musical talent was very developed even then.

Jay was a dear friend to me and all of my family, the Hamlin family. I'm stunned and so saddened to hear of his death, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends who dearly loved him. He will be greatly missed.
