Jay was my free spirited Exotic Isle neighbor and loving friend who would do anything to help me and I will truly miss him. Fly high Jaybird!

Jay and I worked together as architects in L.A. at Anshen+Allen and then CO Architects. He was highly energetic with an encyclopedic knowledge and an amazing ability to recall things, but more importantly, he was fun to work with, always cheerful and ready to share a laugh.

Jay's mother, Jane, aka "DeDe," aptly described his amazing energy when she said, "Jay has the metabolism of a hummingbird!"

After Jay graduated from the UT School of Architecture, he came and worked with my Dad and I (Taniguchi Architects), and we became instant friends, mainly because I saw his talent, but also because we loved to have a good time, even though I was somewhat older. I was there on the Taos skiing trip where wrecked his collar bone and I attended many shows at the Electric Lounge, as his special guest. But what I will always be thankful for, is that Jay connected me with CO Architects, which took Taniguchi Architects to the next level and working w/ CO was one of the highlights of my career. And I'll always remember when Jay was with my son in 2004, in my yard, raking leaves in my backyard. Theo (only 4 yr old at the time) and Jay instantly attached, which isn't that surprising, knowing Jay's magnetic personality! Anyway, my heart is with his family, and do not hesitate to let me know if there's anything I can do. RIP Brother Jay!

What a sweet happy man he was. Such shocking news, he was too young for this. Really a pleasure to be around him. Fond remembrances of work and time in Austin. His loss makes me truly sad.

Larger than life is truly an apt description of the Jay Hughey I worked closely with during his years in Los Angeles. The world is a slightly diminished place without him.

Jay was as fascinating and incomprehensible as fluid dynamics. One could never predict his direction, but could always marvel at the wild arabesques of his movement. Our world has become less magical because the myth-making moon has gone down.
