Jay Remboldt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 5, 2023.
Jay Ernest Remboldt, born on March 23, 1962, in Jamestown, North Dakota, and who lived for many years in the Pearland, Texas, area, departed this world for heaven on May 26, 2023, age 61.

Jay was preceded in death by his parents, James (Jim) Ernest Remboldt on November 22, 1988, and Helen Jeanette (Remboldt) Alford on March 10, 2023.

He is survived by his brothers, John J. Remboldt of Tigard, Oregon, and Jerome (Jerry) D. Remboldt of Pottsboro, Texas. We wish to note his special relationship with his sister-in-law, Julie (Remboldt) Box, of Dallas, Texas. He told her in a text, "You will always be my only sister." His nephews, children of John and Julie, are Jacob Remboldt and wife Nichol Remboldt of Mesa, Arizona, and Jess Remboldt of Hillsboro, Oregon.

Jay was a truly unique and one-of-a-kind person. He had an uncanny memory and would always tell detailed life stories. These always included many, many things and events that most of us had forgotten. He became the "Remboldt family oral historian" as he thrilled everyone with his stories at the 2019 family reunion in North Dakota. Jay loved an adventure. One we all recall was his trip to Berlin, where he looked up distant Remboldts and stayed with them. We still have the pieces of the Berlin Wall he brought home from his trip.

As early as we can remember, Jay was fascinated by the camera. After high school, he got into television camera work at a local TV station. That led him through Wichita Falls, Tulsa, and finally Houston until his passing. The texts and Facebook posts from his coworkers and many friends have all complimented his super talents as a photographer, creativity, helpfulness, work ethic, interesting conversations, sense of humor, being a great person, and always having a positive attitude.

Leading up to his cancer surgery, a year-long treatment, and up until his final days on this earth, Jay, John, and Jerry kept a group text string going. This is one of his stories:

"Hey, I forgot to tell you my connection to Queen Elizabeth. I was working at KHOU, and a reception was held at the Museum of Fine Arts. I got the reception gig as the camera operator to shoot video for the world feed. I stood next to the Queen, Prince Phillip, and Governor Ann Richards for more than 4 hours as they greeted people with a handshake. The only real reason I got the gig was that I owned my own tux. Not bad for a kid from North Dakota."

He was always up to something! He called us from the Waco disaster, where he was running a camera. He told us to watch the Dallas TV show, and sure enough, there he was in a scene! He ran the steady cam during the 2011 Super Bowl and told us to watch the indoor volleyball match. We told our friends, "See that guy working the camera on the sidelines? That is my brother!"

The memorial service will be held privately by the family in North Dakota. We were all hoping he would attend the 2023 family reunion. Instead, we will all celebrate his life along with his mother.

Don't use the "Send Flowers" button. Instead, please add any pictures you have of Jay along with funny stories, comments, etc. (Remember, he loved John Waters!)

A special note on Port Townsend: we are sadly down one zeezaw, but the memories of those days are forever.

Ken Miller, Riverhurst, SK. CA
I spent the most part of 8 winters with my good good friend. From the time he pulled the old bus in behind at Advanced. Some days we would work on park stuff, others would be cooking and eating. Then we had a group that hit the hot tub until closing. When I could no longer get down there we would get on the phone for happy hour for 1 to 2 hrs. It was very sad for me this year because he said he would likely come to visit me,or I would go down to Jamestown. I know I won't forget ge him and our hours together.

He had the best sense of humor. I learned a lot about technical theatre from him in high school. I was lucky to run into him after HS and we sat and visited a long time. What a great guy.

I met Jay when he was a news photographer at KHOU.
We both loved old music...
He had a trombone in his living room that I would play!
I would meet him at his horse barn and ride a few times. I got my 1st kitten from his barn cat!
He met my folks, My father and him talked a bunch about North Dakota, dad was from South Dakota.
I got him a Stedi-Cam gig for the WNBA finals when the Sacramento Monarchs won!
So we had dinner at my folks in Sacramento.
We go way back, we wouldn´t always agree on things, but a Great friend and coworker!
You will be missed Jayster....

Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of Jay, but I do have some memories. Jay always had the most positive outlook on any show. It didn't matter if it was some small high school game or the World Series. I can't remember when or what show we met on, he was just that familiar person. You didn't have to know him, if you were on the show, you were his people. I remember one show, I was limping from an arthritis/gout attack and we were on lunch. Jay asked me: "Do you like baked potatoes?" So we jump in my truck and head to some hole in the wall, in the middle of nowhere, with really great baked potatoes. Another show months later: "You like chicken fried steak?" 10 minutes later, same scenario. Jay became my on show Zagat guy. If he said it was good, I was going!
He kept everything simple & easy going, it didn't matter, he was alway optomistic. I've honestly never seen Jay have a bad day, didn't matter if it was August 109 degree heat index, with 90% humidity. Jay would say something like: "At least it's not raining." Or it could be pouring and the crew is on rain delay for an hour and Jay would say: "At least it's not 100 degrees." Even in his worst battle, with a trache in his throat, Jay refused to let his situation keep him from smiling. I could go on and on, his desire to smile was inspiring to me. Jay you were the geniune article and it was an honor to work with you!

I met Jay when we both worked at Jack in the Box in Denison circa 1976-77. He had an uncanny ability to resist working, happily leaning on a mop while he told his endless stories. It was worth having him around just for that fun! I always thought life would slow down enough to reconnect, but that is what life is and does. I raise my JITB cup to you my old friend, and send all my love and sympathies to John, Jerry, and the Remboldt family!

Many fond memories of growing up with the Rembolts. So sorry for your loss. Jay was always my partner in trouble in Sunday School.
