Jean Boyd Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 16, 2025.

Jean W Boyd was born in Asheville, North Carolina on June 21, 1934 and passed way on January 11, 2025 after a brief illness.

Jean was preceded by the death of her mother, Cornelia Wilkes shortly before her 5th birthday. Her grandmother, Eunice Sims, also passed before Jean's 10th birthday. The church and nuns of St Anthony's of Padua Catholic Church stepped in to enroll Jean into school and to teach her basic life skills for a person of her age. The nun's were instrumental in teaching her to sing in English as well as in Latin. This was only the beginning.

Jean was a devout Catholic , having been baptized and educated , then educated her five children's elementary years at St Anthony's of Padua Catholic Church and School as well. Jean is survived by her five children; Levon Boyd, Wanda S Worthy, Angela Anderson (Alfred), Audrey Boyd and Roberta McCullough (Jeff), six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The children's father, Robert Lee Boyd, Jr, proceeded her in death.

Jean lived an abundant life full of love and admiration from many others. Her gift and love of singing was first nurtured by nuns, continued throughout her life. She sang on her churches choir at Sacred Heart Cathedral and Holy Name of Jesus for more than 40 years. Each of her children and grandchildren all lamented (and loved) the personal birthday song that she would sing to each of them on their day.

Jean loved children and devoted her career of early childhood development throughout North Carolina as a teacher, a mentor, a provider and as a go to person for greater than 30 years. During this time, she also pursued her educational dreams. She was educated at Shaw University and Mastered at NCCU.

She spent her later years residing in Wake Forest, NC, among the company of friends and family.

Her funeral service will be held at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh, NC on January 21, 2025 @ 3:00. She will be laid to rest in Asheville, NC on January 25, 2025 @ 12 noon at the Violet Hill Cemetery.

My life is forever changed for the better for knowing Ms. Boyd. From the time I converted, she always encouraged me to serve on the altar and to become a priest. When I was a senior in high school, I interviewed her for my senior exit project which was about Black Catholic history. She had an encyclopedic memory, and the stories of the joys and highlights as well as the sorrows and low points remain with me to this day. She was a gem of a human being. I will remember her at the altar at my first mass, if God sees fit to let me see that day in two years. I will never forget Ms. Boyd, nor her kindness to, and love for me.

Jean hired me in 1979 as a Social Service/Parent Involvement Assistant for Buncombe/Madison County Head Start in Asheville. I had a previous awareness of her family from attending Saint Anthony School. Jean was instrumental in my early development in the social work field and support of families who were in need to offer a better life and opportunities for their children.
Jean was always respectful to me every one she touched.
