Lubbock - Dorothy Jean Bledsoe Knight Nov. 12, 1931 - Dec. 29, 2023

Jean Bledsoe Knight went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, December 29, 2023. Jean was born Nov. 12, 1931 in Kinston, AL to Charlie and Eitha Cawthon. She married Don Bledsoe in 1952 and her four children were born from that union. Later, as a single mother and wanting a better life for herself and her children, she decided to start her own insurance agency and founded Bledsoe Insurance Agency in 1975. She was the first woman in Lubbock to own an independent insurance agency. As a successful business owner, Jean was also involved in the Lubbock community serving as President of SW Lubbock Rotary Club, Foundation Board at UMC, Home Builders Assn., Toastmasters and others. In 2000, she was an honored recipient of the YWCA Women of Excellence Award in Business. Jean has been a member of Second Baptist Church many years and served in many capacities there.

In 1978 she married Gene Earl Knight and they had 30 years of happiness until his passing in 2009. They enjoyed working together at the agency, traveling, watching Texas Tech football and living life to the fullest!

Jean was a self-taught entrepreneur and loved learning new words. Her passion for books was no secret and she enjoyed reading and looking for ways to improve herself, set and achieve goals, and ways to motivate others.

She was preceded in death by her mother Eitha Cawthon; father Charlie Cawthon; her first husband, Don Bledsoe; her husband Gene Earl Knight; and grandson Jeffrey Liddell.

Survivors include her beloved sister Ann Rodgers of Enterprise, AL., her children Donna Liddell (David) of Albuquerque, NM, Michael Bledsoe (Rita) of Garland, TX, Kim Bledsoe (Darlene) of Caldwell, TX and Katricia Lampley (Joe) of Anson, TX. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and numerous relatives and friends.

The family will celebrate Jean's life of 92 years at 2:00 pm on Tuesday January 2, 2024 at Combest Funeral Home in Lubbock. There will be a reception after the service from 3:00-5:00. Memorials may be sent to Second Baptist Church 6109 Chicago Ave. Lubbock TX 79424. We invite you to visit www. Combestfamilyfuneralhomes.com to sign the virtual guest book and leave a memory.

Jean was always kind and welcoming to me. I was often in her home, as Katricia was my BFF in junior high and high school. I admired Jean´s confidence in herself and her ability to laugh and enjoy life

Jean was such a wonderful, generous person. She and Gene took me under their wings when I was in Lubbock for graduate school and we had so much fun together. Sending love and condolences to her family.

Jean was the first grandchild of our grandparents, Bertie and Minnie Whigham of Kinston, AL. We had good times together as young children; I remember when she moved to Texas. I so very much admired the life she made for herself and her children in Lubbock. She is truly one of the most successful and admired women I have ever known. My daughter, Stacy McManus, was in graduate school at Texas Tech, and Jean and Gene Knight were absolutely wonderful to her and I was so grateful; we lived in Knoxville TN which is a long way from Lubbock. Not only was she so successful professionally, she was a kind, thoughtful, and generous person. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.
