Jean Katherine Mahaney, age 93, of
Yorkville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 18, 2024, while in Hospice Care. She was born on August 20, 1931, in Aurora, Illinois, the youngest daughter of Theodore and Mary (née Hamman) Schomer. Jean was united in marriage to William T. Mahaney in May 1953 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Aurora, Illinois.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Mary (née Hamman) Schomer; her brother, Dan Schomer; her sister, Marion (née Schomer) Heitkotter; her uncle, Gotard (Art) Hamman; her mother-in-law, Irene Mahaney; her beloved husband, William T. Mahaney; her son, Michael F. Mahaney; her grandson, William (Billy) Mahaney; and nephews Ted (Elizabeth) Schomer, Dan (Martha) Schomer, and niece Suzanne (née Vaghy) Willman.
Jean is survived by her two sons: William T. Mahaney III of Yorkville IL. (beloved partner Sherri Farley), and Patrick J. Mahaney (wife Bonnie) of Yorkville IL.; her grandchildren: Brendan Mahaney of Yorkville IL., and Shannon Mahaney (fiancé Brandon Guhrs) of Morris IL.; as well as many loving nieces and nephews: Jeannie (Bob) Shields of Cape Coral, FL; Mary Lynn (Dean, deceased) Bowling of Grove City Ohio; Nancy (Keith) Martin of Aurora, IL; Amanda Lee Heckle of Moose Heart, FL; Doug (Deb) Schomer of Aurora, IL; Sue Sauers of Montana; Tom (Sue) Vaghy of Aurora, IL; Barb (Mick) Reisinger of
Yorkville, IL; Mary Lou (Ron) Haynes of Somonauk, IL; and Johnny (Pam, deceased) Vaghy Aurora IL. As well by many grand nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, and extended family.
Jean attended St. Theresa Catholic School in Aurora until 7th grade and graduated from East Aurora High School in 1949. She worked as an accountant and bookkeeper for her father's business, Schomer Electric, in Aurora and Kewanee, IL, during the 1940s and early 1950s. Jean was an active member and Extraordinary Minister at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aurora before moving to Yorkville, where she continued her membership, devotion, and service at St. Patrick Catholic Parish.
While raising her three boys with her husband, and caring for her mother during the 1960s, Jean also worked as the assistant manager of the deli at National Foods Grocery Store in Aurora. After moving to Yorkville in 1971, she opened and managed Mahaney's Young World in 1972, at the time a well-known Children's Clothing Store which she successfully managed for 20 years. Jean was also involved in her community, serving on the Board of Directors for the Yorkville Chamber of Commerce during their early years, also with the Yorkville Merchants Association.
After closing Mahaney's Young World in 1992, Jean worked part-time in office administration at Refrigeration Unlimited in Bristol, IL. She was a member of the Lady Knights Auxiliary at St. Patrick Catholic Parish until the time of her passing. Officially retiring at age 85, Jean enjoyed many group trips, excursions, and outings with friends and area groups.
During different parts of her life, she also home cared for family members until their passing. These include her uncle Art, her mother, her mother in-law, her husband, and her son Michael.
She loved her family, nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends. Jean was well known for her sense of humor and always positive attitude and pragmatic personality. Even while in her 80's and early 90's you could find her playing computer/internet games, shopping on line, emailing, texting, without much direction needed.

- Celebration Mass: Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick's Church, 406 Walnut St.,
Yorkville, IL 60560.
-Cemetery Service: Directly following the Celebration Mass at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Bristol, IL.
Jean will be remembered for her devotion to her faith, her family, and her community, as well as her sense of humor and entrepreneurial spirit. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
