Jean Morrison passed peacefully to be with her Lord on the 16th of February in Abilene, Texas, the day after turning 89. She was born in Bryan, Texas, to Sumner Carl Kirby and Alma Poole Longmire Kirby.

A graduate of Baylor University, she was a loving and dedicated elementary school teacher for 30 years in Houston and Lake Jackson, Texas where she taught mostly kindergarten and music. She was a lifetime lover of music, beginning early as a twirler in high school in Bryan. She was well remembered as a talented church pianist at Baptist Temple in Houston and as a choir member at both Baptist Temple and First Baptist Church in Lake Jackson and Bryan, Texas. She also spent time playing the church organ in Fort Devens, Massachusetts while her family was stationed there. With her beautiful soprano voice, Jean was often called upon to sing solos at weddings and special events. She and her late husband, Grant, taught the young married Sunday school class at First Baptist Church in Bryan, Texas

In addition, she was an active Bible study teacher, and the primary leader for many years for Women On Mission in Bryan, Texas. She also enjoyed volunteering at the local hospital in College Station.  An accomplished seamstress, she made clothes for herself and her daughters growing up and blessed many others with her talent for sewing. Some of her favorite pastimes included hosting friends in her home, which included feeding Aggie students for over 15 years on Thursday nights. She also enjoyed and appreciated her husband’s green thumb and having flowers in her home and yard.

Jean was an avid domino, card and board gamer, and was a longtime member of a ‘42 club’ in Houston and bridge groups in Bryan and Abilene. However, her favorite activity was traveling. She and Grant enjoyed many summer trips to Colorado, autumn get-a-ways on the east coast, and numerous trips to several countries. When describing Jean, she was most remembered as a loyal and committed friend, staying in touch with her Houston, Lake Jackson, Bryan and military friends for over 65 years, even after her move to Abilene.

Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Grant Morrison. She is survived by her twin daughters, Lisa Young (David) of Ridgway, Colorado and Linda Spencer (Robbie) of Abilene, Texas. One of her greatest joys were her six grandsons.  She is survived by Layne Young (Theresa) of Fallston, Maryland, Kyle Young (Kathy) of Buena Vista, Colorado, Nathan Russell (Andrea) of Richardson, Texas, Aaron Young of Denver, Colorado, Marcus Spencer (Kristian) of Abilene, Texas, and Neal Spencer (Liis) of Abilene, Texas. She loved being entertained by her 12 great-grandchildren and had lots of sweet faces to remember and tell stories about.

Family will be present for visitors from 1-2 pm before the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean’s memory to either: Gideons International  (https://www.gideons.org/donate) or Young Life (https://giving.younglife.org/s/).
