We just learned today that sweet Jean passed away. She was a dear and committed member of Churchland Baptist Church when we served there as pastor and pastor’s wife. Jean and Ed were such a wonderful couple. We loved Jean’s kind heart and indomitable spirit and oh my, how we loved to hear her share her vast knowledge of the sanctuary’s beautiful stained glass windows! Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

My sympathy to the Oast family. Your Mom was indeed a mover and shaker in Portsmouth and many leagacies of her leadership remain today. Rest in peace, Jean.

Her smile that chased the clouds away. Her warm touch that made you feel like you really meant something special to her. The interest she showed for everyone in our family. Her friendship, especially with Mom, deepening with each walk. That she "got" Laney. Her style, her charm, her wit. Teaching Karen Mahjong. Letting me climb her trees any time. Always welcoming us into that country kitchen with something yummy. Oysters at Thanksgiving. Food for thought, along with a love of learning and good discussions about anything and everything. Faith, standards, strong values, love for Ed and all of you. Jean stands tall in all the Mervis hearts. She was a class act all the way. Buzzy joins me is celebrating Jean´s life and send in four condolences. With love to you all-Jo

If there ever was a true Southern Lady it was Jean. Always with a warm smile and a hug, you could count on her to be welcoming and able to make you feel completely at ease - treating you as if she´d known you all her life. I will miss her. Elayne and I send our sympathy to the entire family.

It was both an honor and privilege to be able to care for Jean during her final months. The sweetest lady with the prettiest of smiles. My sincere condolences to Carolyn, Elizabeth and Bama at this time.
