Jean W. Selleh

Tempe - Jean W. Selleh, 98 of Tempe, AZ, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2018 surrounded by her family and friends. She was born March 15, 1920, the daughter of John Mark Wilson and Elizabeth Wilson.

She was born in Safford, AZ where she graduated from high school. She then moved to Tempe to attend Arizona State Teachers College now known as Arizona State University. She married Joseph (Joe) Selleh in Safford on December 10, 1941. They have five children.

In 1947, Jean and her husband Joe opened Joe Selleh Sporting Goods Store on Mill Avenue in Tempe. After Joe's death in 1966, Jean continued to run and manage the store providing letterman jacket and sports gear for teams and schools in the Tempe area until the store closed in 1987.

Golf was a large part of Jean's life and she was a proud supporter of Arizona Women's Golf Association (AWGA). She served as a tournament director in 1984, vice president from 1985 to 1990, and served on the board for many years. Jean was a member of Mesa Country Club where she loved golfing with friends and family playing bridge and enjoying a meal on the patio. She golfed until her early 90s and recorded five hole in ones.

Jean was also a member of the Tempe Rotary Club where she organized fashion shows through the club. Jean was always fashionable.

She is survived by her children, Joseph (Kathleen) Selleh, Jr. (Fountain Valley, CA), Judy (David) Wiggins (Huntington Beach, CA) Mark (Brenda) Selleh (Tempe) Margaret (Dwight) Painter (Mayer) and Jack (Michelle) Selleh (Chandler), 10 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband parents and siblings.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 PM at Joe Selleh Park at 2425 S. Los Felix Dr., Tempe, AZ on November 23, 2018.
