Jean Small Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 13, 2009.
Sixth-grade teacher, formerly of Elizabeth, 68 Jean Ethel Small, 68, of Yemassee, S.C., formerly of New Jersey, died on Feb. 9, 2009. Service is Saturday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m. at Mt. Teman AME Church, 160 Madison Ave., Elizabeth. Visitation is Saturday at 9 a.m. until the service. Arrangements are by the Nesbitt Funeral Home, 165 Madison Ave., Elizabeth. Born in Elizabeth, NJ, Jean attended the Elizabeth public schools. She graduated from Kean College and was formerly employed by Revlon, Worthington Pump. Jean was a wonderful entrepreneur. She sold real estate for Tobin Realty and owned the former Wooten Cleaners. After moving to Yemassee, Jean taught sixth grade in the Yemassee School System, served as the administrative assistant at Bethlehem Baptist Church and was a sister of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Ladies of the Low Country, the American Association of University Women, the National Council of Negro Women and Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society while serving on the Governing Board as treasurer and on the Hampton County Library Board. Somehow Jean also found the time to travel, call her family daily, tend to her garden and be Nana to her nine grandchildren. Jean leaves to cherish loving and lasting memories her beloved husband Dr. William Small, Jr., her loving sons, David Wooten, Jr., Lance George, Rev. Marcus Small, Michael Small and Craig Small. Her loving siblings, Betty Small, Payton Allen, Lindsey Allen, Joan Allen and June Byrd.
