Jean Vantassel, 70, of Marquette, passed away early Wednesday morning, March 7, 2012 at her home in the presence of her loving family and in the care of U.P. Home Health and Hospice. Jean was born on July 5, 1941 in Newberry, a daughter of the late Reinhard Arthur and Olive Rosella (Ackley) Schroeder. She was a 1959 graduate of Engadine High School and also graduated from the Marquette Beauty Academy. Jean married her husband, Jack Vantassel on December 30, 1961 in Lansing. Together they moved to Newberry in 1962 and Marquette in 1972. Jean was employed as head teller at Northern Michigan Bank and as a bookkeeper at Perkins-Kroncich Accounting firm. A cosmetologist, she was employed for many years at Style Setters and Total Image Salon in Marquette. In her free time, Jean enjoyed quilting, crafts, cooking and baking, blueberry picking, camping, and traveling. She enjoyed nothing more however, than spending time with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette. Survivors include her husband, Jack Vantassel; 4 children, Shelly Gartner of Marquette, Steve (Diane) Vantassel of Appleton, WI, Todd (Kristi) Vantassel of Marshfield, WI, and Carmen (Ken) Schmuecker of Williamston, MI; 10 grandchildren, Nick and Patrick Gartner, Nick and Nathan Lemin and Madeline Vantassel, Kayleigh, Janel and Todd Vantassel, Jr., Austin and Allison Schmuecker; 3 great grandchildren, Penny Juhl, Olivia and Alida Gartner; 4 siblings, Jerry (Alice) Schroeder of Newberry, Keith (Alice) Schroeder of Engadine, Karen (Jerry) Irby of Marquette, and Mark (Tracy) Schroeder of Kinross; also surviving are many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. David Van Kley officiating. Jean's family will greet relatives and friends at the church from 11 a.m. Monday until the time of the service.
