Townsend - Obituary: Jeanie McMillin VanWinkle (1939 - 2024)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Jeanie McMillin VanWinkle a devoted and loving wife and mother, a brilliant scientist, and passionate artist who loved and advocated for animals.

In her personal life, Jeanie was known for her humor and unshakable sense of loyalty. She had a unique ability to make everyone feel welcome and loved. She had a sharp wit that made her an unforgettable friend and confidant. She had a deep love and loyalty to her family. As a mother, she was supportive offering guidance, love, and a word of encouragement. As a wife, she shared a partnership rooted in mutual respect and shared passions.

She was a trailblazer in every sense of the word. She was a Fullbright scholar who studied at the University of Paris. With her PhD in Biochemistry, she was a gifted scientist whose intellect and dedication to her work shaped the field in ways that will continue to inspire future generations. She served with the National Institutes of Health, Editorial board for the American Heart Association, and as a professor teaching and performing her research activities. Her curiosity knew no bounds, and her thirst for knowledge was matched only by her unwavering desire to make the world a better place. Her research brought meaningful advancements, but it was her compassionate mentoring and commitment to fostering inclusive environments in academia and the workplace that truly set her apart.

Beyond her impressive academic career, Jeanie was a fierce and compassionate advocate for women's rights, particularly in the workplace. Throughout her life, she worked tirelessly to create opportunities for women to thrive in fields traditionally dominated by men. Whether it was fighting for equal pay, better workplace policies, or simply lending a listening ear to those who needed support, she was a champion for women's voices and equality. Her work in this arena was not just about policy; it was deeply personal, driven by a belief that every woman deserved to be seen, heard, and valued.

Her legacy is one of brilliance, resilience, and fierce love. While her absence leaves a profound void, we are comforted by the knowledge that she leaves behind a powerful legacy of change, inspiration, and love for all those whose lives she touched.

Dr. Jeanie McMillin VanWinkle is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Barry VanWinkle, her children Elizabeth Kowalik and David Wood, her step-children Sara Alvarez and Seth VanWinkle as well as a close-knit group of friends who will continue to carry her spirit forward.

Rest in peace, Jeanie McMillin VanWinkle. You have made the world a better place, and we are so grateful for your light, your laughter, and your unwavering dedication to making sure every person had a chance to shine.
