I am so touched to read all of the incredible entries here on Jeanne´s page. <3 Rest In Peace to an absolute icon!!! She had a deep impact on my life that maybe she never even knew, which is why I feel compelled to write in her guestbook.

I had the privilege of getting to know Jeanne in a very unique way. She was one of the incredible ladies I interviewed for my grad school thesis in 2017, the same year she made her last trip over to Bosnia. My thesis was titled "Wise Old Women," and when my mom, her former neighbor and co-worker, tipped me off to how amazing Jeanne was, I knew she had to be a part of my thesis.

Jeanne was also a friend of my grandma´s, both her neighbor around the corner and friend from church, so this woman´s name had come up more than once in a conversation. It was my honor to set up some time with this very busy woman to have one special conversation, one special afternoon with her. I thought I would leave my 2017 thesis interview with Jeanne here for anyone who is interested: https://www.thewiseoldwomen.com/captured

You´ll find her in the above section on my thesis website. ^ I hope people enjoy getting to know her through this lens as much as I did <3 And I hope people will read the book she wrote with her niece, "The Transport of Hope," until the end of the time!!!

An Irish poem for my beloved Grandma

Beneath the quiet sky of dawn, I search for you, Grandma,
In the hush between the church bell´s call
And the sun´s first spill over Sheffield Avenue
The wind moves swift as your step once did,
Carrying the scent of cold coffee, warm bread,
And the unspoken promise you always kept -
That I was seen, and worthy.

Your love was a hearth that never dimmed,
Even oceans away I felt its glow.
Now I walk in fields without you,
The grass whispering your Danny Boy,
And I am a child again at your table,
Hands wrapped round a cup, cheeks kissed twice.

Grief is the shadow your light leaves,
A long shadow, stretching into every room.
But like the trees you loved
Rooted deep through storm and frost,
I stand because you taught me to -
To bend with the wind and not break.

So I carry you in the giving,
In the laugh I coax from another,
In the gift left quietly at a stranger´s door.
Until the day we meet again,
In whatever pew the morning sun touches first,
You are my forever home,
And I, your unending song.

Mrs. McCue was such an important part of my growing up years. She welcomed me into her home for more hours/days than she probably ever imagined. I remember sitting at the kitchen table many times with Kerry talking about what was happening in our lives. Mrs. McCue never sat. I don´t think she ever stopped moving. Busy in the kitchen and all the stuff she was juggling. Thanks for being an important adult in my growing up years Mrs. McCue. You are missed.

I have had the privilege of knowing Jeanne for many years. We worked together at Milwaukee County Hospital/Froedtert/Medical College of Wisconsin. After Jeanne retired we remained good friends having lunch and doing memorial walks at Holy Family for a dear friend´s grandson. She inspired me to do my own volunteer work after my retirement.
There are saints among us - thanks Jeanne RIP.
