Jeffrey Bartel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 4, 2019.
Dr. Jeffrey Scott Bartel was born May 9, 1972 Ohio and died December 3, 2019 in Pennsylvania at the young age of 47 after a long fight with liver cancer. He was a resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
His life story was a pursuit of knowledge. He graduated in the class of 1990 from Broad Run High School in Virginia. Jeff graduated magna cum laude as a Commonwealth Scholar and received a B.S. and B.A. in Psychology and Political Science at Virginia Tech in the class of 1993. In 1994 he married Teresa M. Campbell. He furthered his education and received a M.S. and PhD in Psychology at Kansas State University in 2006.
Dr. Bartel served as Assistant Professor at Shippensburg University and at Washington and Jefferson College. At the time of his death he was an Associate Professor of Psychology at Seton Hill University.
Jeff was also an adult volunteer of Cub Scout Pack 181, Boy Scout Troop 335 and Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Society and Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity.
Jeff loved his family and his many friends. He is survived by his parents, Bill and Laurie Bartel; his wife, Tracy Bartel; and their children, Nickolas and Julie Bartel. He is also survived by Ken and Jean Summer, Don and Jan Summer, and Doug and Karen Gertz.
He enjoyed his street hockey games, Star Wars movies, Cleveland Indians baseball, and Virginia Tech football. He also enjoyed active discussions and debates. During his lengthy illness, Jeff strove to understand his disease while living as normal of a life as he could, including working and traveling. He will be missed by many, many friends and family, especially his children.
Memorial service arrangements are currently pending. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to his children's education fund. Donations can also be made in his honor to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (www.cholangiocarcinoma.org).

I was a student of Dr. Bartel's at Seton Hill. His passion for education was made clear through every lecture, assignment, and discussion. He pushed us to think outside of the box, expand our perspectives on endless topics, and grow as students (and as people, too!) Thank you, Dr. Bartel. My education wouldn't have been the same without you. You will never be forgotten, and surely will be missed by all that have known you.

I used to care for Jeff in the hospital. What a wonderful man! Made the best banana bread I ever had! He was always so kind and thoughtful and no matter how sick had a smile on his face. He always had his laptop in hand even while getting treatments and continue to work In his professor duties. My heart is so sad for his family. My deepest condolences.

Tracy, I don't have enough words to tell you how very sorry I am. Jeff was such a courageous and wonderful man and the relationship you shared will always be special. My love and prayers to you, Nickolas and Julie.
