Jeffrey W Hott, MD, age 59, passed away peacefully on his Hancock County farm on August 21, 2018 after successfully fighting a near seven year battle against brain cancer, by continuing to enjoy life, but obviously lost the war. Dr. Hott was the first physician from a family of hard working people with down to earth values. Both grandfathers, George Hott and Cecil Stanley, worked the steel mills of Gary, Indiana. Both parents Roby and Dorothy Hott received college degrees and encouraged him to continually better himself.
Jeff was a 1979 graduate of New Palestine High School, 1981 Biology degree from Purdue and Allopathic Physician with Highest Honors from Indiana University in 1987. He followed at IU with residency in Internal Medicine and fellowships in Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.
A significant portion of his career was devoted to research in lung cancer, achieving grants from American Cancer Society, National Institute of Health, and Veterans Administration. This research was published in over 30 nationally recognized journals. He enjoyed his patient care responsibilities as pulmonary staff at IUMC, Wishard Hospital, VAMC, director of VAMC intensive care unit, Indiana University Thoracic Oncology Clinic, and Indiana University Occupational Health. He was a member of many professional organizations.
He loved his career and teaching, but truly felt God’s love in nature. He was ever-present outside: gardening, hiking, camping, fishing, snow skiing, tennis, bonfires, just “working” his farm, while always cheering for Purdue.
Survivors include his endless care giver, one true love, Sandra Aspy MD. and two incredible sons and their wives: Zed and Courtney (Merz) Hott and Nash and Hannah(Dixon) Hott. He is also survived by his father Roby (Susan) Hott of Bradenton Florida, siblings Karen (Peter)Lund, Randall Hott and Robyn (Mark) Gunnoe, and his beloved cousins the Allen’s; Charles(Barb), Thomas, Sharon(Gregg Conforti) and John(Lori) and many treasured nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy H (Stanley) Hott and his most loyal 4 pawed friend Sissy, who he looks forward to joining.
He wishes to express a special thank you to the wonderful caring staff of Hancock Regional Hospice and John Hittle MD.
Per his request there will be no services. Instead, any time you would have spent attending, spend planting something, anything (houseplant, tree or flower) or give time to your favorite charity. His was PAWS of Hancock County.
Then, in Jeff’s memory, once the work is done, stop, open a cold beverage, scratch the ears of your rescued pet and turn it up.

I went to Medical School with Jeff (Dr. Hott) starting in 1983 and as his obituary implies he was a treasured classmate and friend. So easy to talk to and humble regarding his intelligence. We were only in touch those 4 years (1983-1987) so I enjoyed reading about his accomplishments post medical school but am not surprised. He was special back then and went on to accomplish great things. Fair winds my friend!

I too had the pleasure of working with Dr. Hott at IU Occupational Health. Many times over the past few years I've thought of him with the hope that he was out working his farm and enjoying his life. I knew he would be if he could. There was never any doubt that that was his favorite place to be. As a physician he was so down to earth and such a joy to work with! Whether he was sharing knowledge or expertise or some of his home grown tomatoes he was just like part of your family. Rest in peace Dr. Hott...your worldly work is done but I'm sure God has plans for you.

We were so sad to hear of Jeff's passing, but know he's in a better place rejoicing among the angels with his King! Memories of the old neighborhood come flooding back - much simpler, and happier times hanging out, riding bikes and or course, the lake! Rest in the arms of The Father, Jeff and we'll see you on the other side! Sending prayers and hugs to the entire family and will certainly be "turning it up" in his memory!

He is seated at the right hand of our father. My condolences to the family. I had the honor and pleasure of working for Dr. Hott. I was one of many nurses that took pride working by his side. He touched my life and I'm forever grateful. I will miss you my mentor, my friend. Tracie Bell, RN

My condolences to the Hott family. My family, the Walt Wintin family were friends of the Hott family in Warren Twp. from 1962 until 1967. We were all involved with the Boy Scouts of America Troop and Cub Pack in the Pleasant Run School District during that time. My husband Walt and I and Roby were involved with the leadership, and my son David and Randy were Scouts during that time. Roby and Walt, Randy and David had some canoe adventures together. In 1967 we moved to Seymour, where I still live, and we lost touch. David and his family moved to New Pal around 1983 or 4, and David and his wife Carole taught at New Pal for several years. They still live there.

Sandy, I just read Jeff's obituary in the "IndyStar" and honor his devotion to medical research and patient care while hearing his depth of love for family. Not having personally known him when I worked at Wishard Hospital, I do fondly recall the Jefferson Jr. High years of friendship you and I had and I'm praying for you in this time of mourning his loss. But I'm rejoicing in the love and dedication you showed as his caregiver with your own medical expertise. May your memories of a shared love with Jeff sustain you and may you be comforted with a purpose: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too" (2 Cor. 1:3-5). Warmly and prayerfully, Carla (Cook)

Remembering Jeff, Had a lot of good times back "in the day". Lost contact over the years but I was very proud of his accomplishments, but most of the "Lake Gang" made good! After reading his obit. I was astonished but not all that surprised that his personal and career influence had become so prolific. Jeff was intelligent, conscientious and by far the best student among us! May God bless you Jeff and your loved ones in their time of grief; I am certain you will be missed. Travel well brother...Kevin and Sherie Miller, Greenfield

I worked with Dr. Hott for many years in occupational medicine. He was such a wonderful teacher to all of us as well as a great doctor to our patients. We were all blessed to have walked along side him if even for a moment in this earthly life. See you soon Doctor! God Bless.
